Seattle Mariners pitcher Bryan Woo to make season debut against Athletics
The Mariners starting pitching rotation will get a boost on Friday, as Bryan Woo makes his first start of the 2024 season.
After spending the first month of the season on the injured list with right elbow inflammation, Bryan Woo is set to return to the Mariners starting rotation on Friday. Woo has made three rehab starts in AAA Tacoma and is ready to make his first start of 2024 against the A's. In his rehab stint with Tacoma Woo has thrown 11.1 shutout innings, striking out 17, with no walks, and just five hits allowed.
Bryan Woo looking to give the Mariners rotation a boost
Woo has been impressive in each of his rehab starts and should be ready to give the Mariners starting rotation a lift. The Mariners had a rough end to their road trip in Minnesota, where Seattle was blown out 11-1 by the Twins, losing a series for the first time in almost a month (finishing 3-4 on the road trip). Adding Bryan Woo is just the shot in the arm this team needs, as they begin their next home stand. Woo went (4-5), with a 4.21 ERA, while also striking out 93 batters in 87.2 IP, in 2024.
How Woo performed against the A's last year and in his most recent start for AAA Tacoma
Against the A's in 2023, Bryan Woo went (2-0) and threw 11 shutout innings in each of his two starts against Oakland. Woo also struck out 11 A's and posted a 1.00 WHIP in those two games. Considering the Mariners have not thrown Woo longer than five innings in each of his three rehab starts, how long he goes Friday will be interesting to see. In his last start for Tacoma, Woo went five innings, and gave up just three hits, while holding Sacramento scoreless.
What the Mariners starting rotation will look like going forward
The Mariners decided to send starting pitcher Emerson Hancock down to AAA Tacoma this past Wednesday to make room on the roster for two relievers. This was done with the expectation the Mariners would add starting pitcher Bryan Woo to the roster on Friday. With Woo now coming up to Seattle on Friday, here is what the Mariners starting rotation looks like: Luis Castillo, George Kirby, Logan Gilbert, Bryce Miller, and Bryan Woo.
With the addition of Bryan Woo, Mariners continue to boast a deep rotation
The Mariners starting staff has been unreal for the past month of the season, which included a streak of 21 straight games of allowing two earned runs or less in each start. Bryan Woo adds to the Mariners' talented pitching staff and provides them with even more starting pitching depth. With Bryan Woo making his first start of the season on Friday against Oakland, the Mariners rotation is looking even more intimidating.
