We recently wrote about how Luis Urías was one player who Seattle Mariners fans were probably happy to see the back of, after his limited and mostly disappointing play last year. Well, now we can confirm 100% that he won't be back with the ball club in 2025 — unlike what ended up happening with Jorge Polanco — but he is staying in the AL West.

As reported by Athletics' MLB.com beat reporter Martín Gallegos, Urías has a locker inside the former Oakland franchise's clubhouse (and apparently has been assigned a number 17 jersey). It's a one-year, $1.1 million contract with performance bonuses for plate appearances.

The 27-year-old will be able to provide cover at a variety of infield positions for the Athletics, having seen a good balance of time at shortstop, second and third base during his seven years of Major League action.

Former Mariner Luis Urias lands with division-rival Athletics

Urías previously arrived in Seattle in a trade during Nov. 2023 from the Boston Red Sox, in exchange for pitcher Isaiah Campbell. It didn't take long for the Mariners to begin wondering about the move when he showed up for spring training in Peoria in less-than-stellar shape.

The Mariners had had high hopes the Mexico native would fulflil his potential with them and make the third base position his own. Instead, he struggled terribly early in the 2024 season and was subsequently optioned to Triple-A Tacoma after two months into the campaign.

Giving credit where it's due, Urías did turn his form around with the Rainiers and was called back up by the Mariners at the end of August, going on to produce some spectacular results, albeit only in 12 at-bats. Ultimately, though, it still wasn't enough to stop him ending the season with a career-low .191 batting average at the Major League level (compiled in 41 games).

Following the conclusion of the 2024 campaign, Urías cleared waivers and decided to elect for free agency as opposed to accepting another assignment to the minors, Now, Mariners fans will be hoping he doesn't come back to haunt their beloved ball club by getting his career back on track with the Athletics and causing the M's problems when the divisional foes face each other this season.
