We wrote on Monday about how Jorge Polanco is redeeming the Seattle Mariners' front office one swing at a time, but it's becoming almost surreal at this point.

Polanco accounted for all five RBI in the Mariners' 5-3 win on Tuesday night at home to the Los Angeles Angels, and overall leads the majors with a .819 slugging percentage, 1.243 OPS and 258 wRC+ based on at least 70 plate appearances.

On the flip side, the Mariners continue to deal with an unnerving ever-growing injury list, with Dylan Moore being placed on the 10-day IL with right hip inflammation retroactive to April 26. And as if the starting rotation wasn't suffering enough, even though Bryce Miller pitched 5.0 shutout innings against the Angels, he admitted to the media his back locked up during pregame and he never felt right.

The Mariners have been dealing well with adversity so far in 2025, and must be praised for their mental fortitude in the face of so many injuries. Let's now take a look at the probable pitchers and starting lineups for Wednesday's game, with first pitch scheduled for 1:10 p.m. PT at T-Mobile Park.

Starting for the Mariners: Emerson Hancock, RHP (1-1, 7.71 ERA)

In a lot of ways the Mariners are still trying to work out what they have in Emerson Hancock. Can he still live up to the promise of being a sixth overall daft pick? Is he going to end up being a back-of-the-rotation starter? Or something else altogether?

At least the righty now has more opportunities to prove himself, thanks to the combination of Logan Gilbert's recent injury and George Kirby yet to return from his own ailment. The season didn't start too well for him with his disaster versus the Detroit Tigers, but since returning from a spell in Tacoma he's been excellent in two outings for the Mariners.

Hancock's most recent start in Boston was impressive, as he allowed just five hits, two walks and two earned runs in 6.0 innings, while also striking out a career-high seven and notching the W. His sinker has replaced his four-seamer as his main pitch, and it will be interesting to see if this remains the case as we move forward.

Starting for the Angels: Tyler Anderson, LHP (2-0, 2.60 ERA)

The Mariners have some familiarity with Tyler Anderson, after trading for him during the 2021 season. He wasn't particularly effective as he produced a 4.81 ERA, 4.52 FIP and 1.319 WHIP in 13 starts, before moving on to new pastures.

Since leaving Seattle, Anderson has (of course) experienced a renaissance that's finally seen him show why he was selected 20th overall in the 2011 draft. He's been named an All-Star in two of the past three seasons and is now arguably the best starter in the Angels' rotation, entering Wednesday's outing leading them with a 1.4 WAR, 2.60 ERA and 1.048 WHIP.

The southpaw's most recent start came at home to the Pittsburgh Pirates, with him allowing six hits, no walks and three earned runs in 6.0 innings and helping the Angels win 4-3. His main two offerings are his four-seam fastball and changeup, but he does also have a viable cutter to add into the mix.

What's at Stake?

The Mariners are on a roll at the moment, winning 14 of their past 19 games to rebound from a 3-7 start to the season. Another victory over the Angles on Wednesday afternoon would also guarantee seven consecutive series wins and continuing to stand all alone in first place in the AL West.

In terms of potential tie-breakers even this early in the season, a win against the Angels would see the Mariners continue to strengthen their position when it comes to their record versus the rest of the division. They currently have the best record against the AL West at 8-3 and need to keep building on this, especially ahead of an important six-game road trip against the Texas Rangers and Athletics.
