In the latest case of the phrase "you can't win 'em all" being undefeated, the Seattle Mariners will not be going 162-0 in 2025 after losing to the Athletics on Friday.

The high of the Mariners' 4-2 win over the A's on Opening Day quickly fizzled in Game 2 of the four-game series, with the M's mustering only five hits in a 7-0 shutout loss. Jeffrey Springs was fantastic for the visitors, pitching six shutout innings with three hits and one walk against nine strikeouts.

All Seattle can do now is try to right the ship on Saturday, when Bryce Miller will take the hill for a 6:40 p.m. first pitch at T-Mobile Park. Here's a look at the pitching matchup and probable lineups.

Probable starting pitchers

For Mariners: Bryce Miller, RHP (0-0)

This will be the 26-year-old Miller's first start of 2025, and he'll look to build on a breakout 2024 season that saw him post a 2.94 ERA over 180.1 innings. He actually led all Mariners pitchers with 3.4 rWAR. He's sure to lean heavily on a fastball that was among the most effective in the majors last season, though Mariners fans should also keep an eye out for the new cutter that Miller debuted during spring training.

For Athletics: Osvaldi Bido, RHP (0-0)

The 29-year-old Bido was impressive in an eight-start run for the A's between July 23 and September 2 of 2024, logging a 3.56 ERA with 44 strikeouts over 43 innings. A's manager Mark Kotsay thinks Bido can be a "frontline" starter, and certain metrics from last season (i.e., a hard-hit rate in the 100th percentile) back him up. Mariners hitters can expect to see plenty of four-seamers and sliders, the latter of which is a standout pitch.

What's at Stake?

The Mariners have come to the first point of their season where they just have to shake off a loss and move on.

It seems possible that Friday's loss was a case of a hangover, both from Thursday's thrilling win and from the press conference the Mariners held Friday to announce Cal Raleigh's $105 million extension. It was fun at times and emotional in others.

The Mariners could otherwise use a proper offensive outburst. The lineup has largely been lifeless in this series, producing just one run in the 17 innings that didn't feature epic home runs by Randy Arozarena and Jorge Polanco. Suffice it to say this is not the start the team wanted after struggling to put runs on the board for so much of 2024.

No matter how it happens, of course, the goal is to get to 2-1 and then go from there.
