MLB insider has blockbuster trade proposal for Mariners that could save 2024 season
The Mariners need a bat, and the latest reports have them being aggressive in going after not just a bat, but the biggest one on the market
The Seattle Mariners moved on from their veteran first baseman Ty France earlier this week, leaving a hole at the position. Rookie Tyler Locklear is on the roster to take his place right now, but he is not a proven commodity at the big league level yet. The Mariners also have lacked impact and power in their lineup this year and there is one player who could be available that the Mariners could put at first base to give them impact, power, and a legitimate threat in the lineup - Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
The Mariners are aggressively trying to get Vladimir Guerrero Jr
The Toronto Blue Jays first baseman has been discussed as a fit for many contending teams this season because there is a year and a half left on his contract and the Blue Jays are under .500 and are likely sellers at the trade deadline. There was a report earlier today from MLB Insider Jon Heyman that, "the Mariners were actually pretty aggressive in trying to get Vlad".
This is the latest big Mariners rumor because the Mariners have not been linked to many players directly and have not been publicly discussed as being aggressive or to be actively looking to make a big splash of a trade. The biggest part of this rumor is that the Mariners were being "aggressive". That is important because President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto had tampered expectations last week on Brock and Salk about there not being a lot of opportunities to make an impact trade.
Things may have changed for the Mariners front office after the injuries to JP Crawford and Julio Rodriguez, and now they could be more willing to be aggressive in this market. The Mariners desperately need some spark to get their season back on the rails because the lineup has been dragging down the team in the month of July. If the organization can bring in Vlad Guerrero Jr. to put some life back into the roster, we could see them take off again in August and September.
Jon Heyman did say that he does not expect Guerrero Jr. to be traded, so it is possible that the Mariners will not end up acquiring the All Star first baseman's services. However, it would be very exciting if they did and they have the prospect capital to make it happen. Check out a possible trade package for the Toronto slugger here.
If nothing else, it is a positive sign to hear that the Mariners are being aggressive in trade talks. They could use an impact hitter in their lineup and Vlad Guerrero Jr. certainly is an impact bat. He was the starter for the American League in the All Star Game earlier this month and all of his major offensive stats would be the best on the Mariners roster if he were to be acquired, so he is someone to keep an eye on as we approach the trade deadline.
