Mariners Injury Updates: Julio Rodriguez and JP Crawford both receive bad news
The Mariners made a flurry of moves on Tuesday as two key players head to the 10 day IL and a fan favorite is designated for assignment.
The Mariners made a flurry of roster moves on Tuesday, in large part to the two injuries that were recently suffered by the team and topped off by the waiving of a fan favorite.
J.P. Crawford to the 10 day IL, Leo Rivas recalled from AAA
J.P. Crawford left last night's game in the first inning after he was hit in the hand by a Tyler Anderson pitch. News came out later that Crawford has a hairline fracture in his right pinkie. This will be Crawford's second stint on the IL, as he missed sometime early in the season with a strained oblique. Crawford definitely hasn't played like the 5.1 WAR player from 2023.
Leo Rivas will get his second shot with the Mariners in 2024 as he fills in for J.P. Crawford. Rivas currently has a slash line of .296/.441/.424 with 50 runs and 24 SB in 266 at-bats with the Rainiers. Rivas is definitely not J.P. but he should be a serviceable replacement while he is up.
Julio Rodriguez to the 10 day IL, Cade Marlowe and Jonatan Clase recalled from AAA
Julio Rodriguez left Sunday's game after he almost made a phenomenal catch crashing into the wall on a Yordan Alvarez triple. Julio jammed his ankle into the wall. Julio will head to the 10-day IL with a high ankle sprain. Even though Julio hasn't been hitting for much power he has still been one of the best hitters on the Mariners, hopefully, it is a minimum stay on the IL but it most likely will be longer.
Cade Marlowe and Jonatan Clase (was optioned after Monday's game) were both recalled from Tacoma. Marlowe stats aren't great but not horrible in Tacoma. He currently has a slash line of .236/.342/.395 with 13 HR's and 45 RBI's. Jonatan Clase is off the MLB roster for less than 24 hours and will most likely serve as a bench player with Julio out.
Ty France DFA'd, Tyler Locklear recalled from AAA
It's a sad end to Ty France's career with the Mariners but when you don't produce for the past two years a change needs to be made, and a message needs to be sent to the offensive players that aren't producing on this team.
Tyler Locklear gets his second chance to take the everyday role at first base if a trade isn't made in the next week. Locklear showed some flashes when he was up last time but needs to show more consistency if he is to stick around. These injuries come at a bad time as the Mariners are tied with the Astros atop the AL West.
