The Mariners were able to take two out of the three games against the scrappy Diamondbacks, putting them atop the AL West. It seems like things are finally starting to come together with bats beginning to heat up and the starting rotation living up to the pre-season hype.

Best Hitter: Josh Rojas

.200/.273/.800, 2 H, 2 HR, 3 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K

During the offseason, third base was the position that most fans were worried about. After a month of the regular season, both Luis Urías and Josh Rojas have been putting up strong numbers, but the latter is slowly making a strong case for the starting job. Arguably his best series so far, Rojas hit two home runs against his former team to bring his total for the season to three. The first home run was off of the first pitch the Mariners saw, a four-seam fastball by Zac Gallen.

Rojas is currently slashing .297/.366/.516 over his first 72 plate appearances of the season, continuing the upward trajectory he started after first arriving in Seattle. His plate discipline has been great this year with chase, whiff, and strikeout rates in the top quartile of qualified hitters. His launch angle has also been excellent with a 99th percentile sweet-spot rate of 49.0%. This is why despite having a below-average hard-hit rate and average exit velocity, he's been able to slug >.500.

Honorable Mention: Mitch Garver

.200/.200/.600, 2 H, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 R, 1 RBI, 4 K

Garver still hasn't quite thawed out all the way but his two extra base hits in this series could be signs that at the very least, his power is starting to come back. He's still striking out far too much and walking far too infrequently to lift his paltry season numbers of .143/.256/.273 but credit where credit is due for his performance in the three games against the Diamondbacks.

Best Pitcher: George Kirby

7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 12 K

After two bad outings in a row, Kirby seems to have locked in for the last two starts against Colorado and Arizona. While he only pitched five innings against the Rockies, he seemed to be at full strength once more against the Diamondbacks, taking no prisoners and amassing an incomprehensible 23 swings and misses on the way to striking out 12. 15 of said swings and misses were on his four-seam fastball which got up to 99.3 mph. On the other side of things, his slider earned nine called strikes.

After his fourth start against the Reds in which he gave up two earned runs in six innings, his 2024 ERA stood at 6.64. After twelve more scoreless innings, his ERA is down to 4.18. It's still a little higher than most are used to but with this performance, he put the rest of MLB back on notice.

Honorable Mention: Logan Gilbert

6.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 9 K

While not quite as spotless as Kirby, Gilbert had a strong strikeout showing of his own in the final game of the series. He collected 16 swings and misses, split pretty evenly across his cutter, slider, and four-seam fastball. He continues to love living at the top of the zone with his heater and going down and away with the splitter.

Other than his two earned runs, he was a dominant force on the mound. His season ERA and WHIP are still excellent at 2.03 and 0.80.

Best Moment: Mitch Haniger Grand Slam

Seattle loves Mitch Haniger and he loves it. It shows in the way that he plays baseball and the more the season goes on, the more it feels like his dismal 2023 season was an anomaly. Sure, he doesn't have the highest OPS on the team but his ability to step up in big moments remains unchallenged.

In the bottom of the sixth inning of the first game in the series, the Mariners were protecting a one-run lead. After loading the bases with no outs, Haniger saw a lazy four-seam fastball that got too much of the plate and sent it 389 feet, putting Seattle up 6-1 and sealing the deal.

The Mariners scored just 11 runs over the three games so it wasn't the greatest offensive product we've seen this year but it makes explosive moments like these all the more better. When all is said and done, it was enough for the Mariners to earn the series win, sitting atop the AL West as they prepare to welcome the Atlanta Braves to town.
