Baseball is finally back — at least in a manner of speaking — as teams' pitchers and catchers report for duty in Arizona and Florida. For the Seattle Mariners specifically, their pitchers and catchers will report to the Peoria Sports Complex in Arizona.

This will be Dan Wilson's first spring training as Mariners manager and he'll be looking to build on the success he achieved after he took over in late August last season. This specifically applies to the lineup, which was brutal for the majority of the 2024 campaign, but excelled in September when they scored the third-most runs in the Majors.

Mariners Spring Training Report Date, Location & Other Important Dates to Know this Spring

Pitchers and catchers report: Thursday, Feb.13

This is when it all begins, with plenty of interesting subplots to consider, including whether the rotation can be as remarkably healthy as last season, when the Mariners were the only team to have four pitchers with 30+ starts. In this respect, there really needs to be a positive step in Emerson Hancock's development to be able to cover for any potential injuries, with the 2020 sixth overall draft pick yet to progress as previously projected (and hoped).

As for the catchers, Cal Raleigh will once more by the main man behind the plate, but with some concern that the Mariners rely on him too much. Along these lines it will help if Mitch Garver can do better during his second season in Seattle, following a campaign which was highlighted by the second-worst batting average and OPS of his eight years in the Majors.

First full-squad workout: Tuesday, Feb. 18

The first full-squad workout will include 31 non-roster invites, of which 12 have Major League experience. Of these, we have particular interest in a couple of 36-year-old former All-Stars who haven't played in the Majors since 2021; more specifically Drew Pomeranz, who won a World Series in 2018, and Neftalí Feliz, who was AL Rookie of the Year back in 2010.

We will also get to see five Mariners prospects who were included in both MLB Pipeline’s and Baseball America’s Top 100, albeit not ranked in the some positions in both media outlets. Infielder Colt Emerson is undoubtedly the most noteworthy prospect, but fellow infielders Cole Young and Michael Arroyo, along with outfielder Lazaro Montes and catcher Harry Ford, will all also receive plenty of attention.

First spring training game: Friday, Feb. 21 vs. San Diego Padres (12:10 PM)

This one's going to have a little added extra spice to it, due to Scott Servais now being a member of the San Diego Padres coaching staff. He was fired last season with just under six weeks of the campaign remaining, with plenty of people believing he was made the scapegoat.

In any event, Servais is now serving as a special assistant for baseball operations and player development in San Diego. Making all of this even more intriguing is that the Mariners share the Peoria Sports Complex with the Padres during spring training, thus increasing the potential for some awkward situations of Jerry Dipoto bumping into the man who he fired, in a corridor somewhere.

Opening Day/Home Opener: Thursday, March 27 vs. Athletics (7:10 PM)

This is of course what it's really all about, with the Mariners' preparations getting them ready to begin one of the most important regular seasons in franchise history. It's often better for fans if Opening Day is at home, with the atmosphere at T-Mobile Park guaranteed to be even more electric, due to the recently elected Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki being set to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

We would anticipate Logan Gilbert will get the nod for Opening Day after his phenomenal 2024 season, thus officially taking over as staff ace from Luis Castillo, who held the mantle the two previous campaigns. From a historical perspective the Mariners are 29-19 all time on Opening Day, which actually represents the second-best winning percentage all-time in the Majors, at .604.
