There has always been something special about Sunday Night Baseball, ever since it first began on April 15, 1990, in a matchup between the Montreal Expos and New York Mets in Canada. And as it prepares for its 36th year of coverage on ESPN, Seattle Mariners fans will surely be happy to know their team will among those getting the opportunity to play before a national television audience.

As confirmed by MLB, ESPN's first batch of Sunday Night Baseball games have been unveiled, and they include the Aug. 17 Little League Classic matchup between the Mariners and Mets. While New York will technically be the home team, the game will be played in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, with it also marking the first time Seattle appears in the event that started back in 2017.

To actually appear on Sunday Night Baseball full stop for a second consecutive year is a bit of a change for the Mariners, who last season hosted the Mets and drubbed them 12-1. Prior to this, Seattle had not appeared on ESPN's signature weekly baseball telecast since July 31 in 2016, when they lost 7-6 in 12 innings to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field after giving up a 6-0 lead.

Mariners on Sunday Night Baseball in Seattle is a rarity

Before last season, you had to go back a lot further to find the last time the Mariners actually hosted Sunday Night Baseball ... on June 6 in 2004. On that occasion Seattle played the Chicago White Sox, and beat them 5-4 courtesy of a walk off.

Arguably the Mariners' most memorable appearance on Sunday Night Baseball came on August 5 in Cleveland against the then-Indians, during their historical record-equalling 116-win season of 2001. However, Seattle made the wrong kind of history on this specific night as they gave up a 14-2 lead and eventually lost 15-14 in 11 innings, resulting in Cleveland tying the Major League record for the largest ever comeback to win a game.

The full schedule isn't out yet, so we'll see if the Mariners are able to get any more appearances on Sunday Night Baseball during this coming season, particularly at T-Mobile Park. Of course, one of the best ways to increase their chances is to be a genuine contender, which is a decent proposition with one of the best rotations in all of baseball.
