Jerry Dipoto is going big, once again, during this international free agency period. Tied for the most international bonus pool signing money, the M's went for elite talent over bulk.
After a history of the opposite, Dipoto has changed the Mariners course over the last six or seven years. Starting in 2017-18 when he gave Julio Rodriguez $1.75 million, he followed it up in subsequent years with Noelvi Marte ($1.55 million) in 2018-19, Gabriel Gonzalez ($1.3 million) in 2021, Lazaro Montes ($2.5 million) in 2022, Michael Arroyo ($1.375 million) in 2022, Felnin Celesten ($4.7 million) in 2023, and shortstop Dawel Joseph ($3.3 million) in 2024. The Mariners have been taking some big swings, and it is starting to pay off.
Mariners sign OF Yorger Bautista to largest signing bonus in international free agent class
The Mariners' deal with Yorger Bautista is said to be around a $2 million signing bonus, tied for the most in the class. Bautista comes with a lot of helium, earning the nickname "La Bestia" (The Beast). With a name like that, you know the guy just demolishes the baseball.
The Mariners also landed No. 19 prospect Kendry Martinez (SS) from the Dominican Republic alongside 10 others. They clearly had their Roki Sasaki backup plan ready.
Ok, back to Baustista. MLB.com says the tools are loud with "elite bat speed and raw power," and some scout believe he is the best they have seen from an international free agent in half-decade. That's pretty high praise for the 6-foot-1, 175-pound 17-year-old.
MLB.com gives Bautista really good grades across the board (50-hit, 65-power, 60-run, 65-arm, 55-field). They go on to say that Bautista has one of the strongest arms in the class with a plus glove that could play in centerfield, but is likely to end up in right. Perhaps the most overlooked part of his scouting report is the 60-grade run tool, a nice pairing for someone with so much potential with the bat. MLB.com reports that Bautista ran a 6.4, 60-yard dash, an insane time for someone that big that should provide a plus hit-power combination.
The international signing period has been a great way for Seattle to improve their farm and they have done a great job in years past. Bautista is an exciting player and, given the commitment that Seattle made to him, they think so too.
