Corey Seager trade buzz has Mariners fans hoping he leaves the AL West

A potential move to make M's fans finally like the third Seager brother.

When it comes to the Seager family, they have a strong connection with the Seattle Mariners organization. Kyle Seager is ranked top five in a whole host of career franchise categories, including bWAR, hits, home runs and RBI, while his brother Justin was selected by the M's in the 12th round of the 2013 Major League draft.

It's a different story with other brother Corey Seager, who has proven to be somewhat of a nuisance to the Mariners since joining their divisional rivals the Texas Rangers after signing his monster 10-year, $325 million deal. While not exactly terrorizing the M's, the 31-year-old does have a .849 OPS and seven home runs against them since 2023.

Corey Seager leaving the Rangers would strengthen the Mariners' position in the AL West

As such, we're sure Mariners fans wouldn't be displeased if Seager were to leave the AL West, especially with him playing even better compared to his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers, including helping the Rangers win their first World Series in 2023. Well, ask and you might receive, depending on how much can be read into a report from The Athletic (subscription required):

"Corey Seager, owed $186 million over the next six years from a Texas club looking to reduce payroll, theoretically could have been an option. But according to major-league sources briefed on his contract, the Braves are one of eight teams on Seager’s no-trade list."
Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon

In some respects, this information was almost casually put out there by Rosenthal and Sammon, with it nicely tucked away in the middle of their article. However, make no mistake about the reality that the Rangers moving Seager would make major headlines around the majors.

Just to be clear, we're under no illusion that the Mariners would get involved in any scramble among teams to entice the Rangers with appealing trade packages for Seager. In addition, we're not entirely sold on the idea that the M's should even want him, or that their Texas rivals would trade the five-time All-Star within the division.

No, this is more about the Rangers possibly willingly giving up their best player and in the process knocking themselves down a peg or two. Combined with the Houston Astros also fading (or so it finally appears), this would be nothing but good news for the Mariners as they look to build on this past season's first AL West title since 2001.

Ultimately, if forced to make a prediction, we're not convinced the Rangers will end up trading Seager, although this is one of those occasions where there would be no issue with being proven wrong. With this in mind, we believe we speak on behalf of Mariners fans everywhere when we say this: Please do leave the AL West, Mr. Seager.
