The Seattle Mariners drew first blood in their campaign to take the AL West lead back from the Athletics this week, winning 9-2 in Sacramento on Monday. But now here comes Gage Jump, who checks all the boxes as a pitcher the Mariners should fear.
As Jeff Passan of ESPN was first to report, the A's are calling up Jump from Triple-A Las Vegas as a replacement for Aaron Civale. Civale just pitched on Monday night, but is now expected to go on the injured list with some kind of shoulder/lat issue.
It's unclear when or even if the Mariners will see Jump in the ongoing three-game series, which concludes on Wednesday. He isn't listed as a probable pitcher for Tuesday (Luis Severino) or Wednesday (Jeffrey Springs). But since the 23-year-old lefty has been on a six-day rotation and last pitched on May 20, it's possible the A's will shake things up.
Whatever the case, Jump is MLB Pipeline's No. 41 overall prospect and he has the kind of profile that should strike fear into Mariners fans. Namely, he's a left-hander who throws hard.
No thanks to Rob Refsnyder, this Mariners offense has a 76 wRC+ against lefties that ranks 27th in MLB. They also have a league-high 26.5 whiff percentage against fastballs over 95 mph. In the minors, Jump had been averaging 95.8 mph on his four-seamer.
No matter what he does against the Mariners, Gage Jump is the kind of pitcher the A's need
Of course, calling up Jump is something the A's were bound to do at some point in 2026. And now that he's up, he could make it hard for them to send him back down.
Put simply, Jump is a talented pitcher who is joining a pitching staff that is notably short on talent. The A's rank 23rd or worse in the league in ERA, strikeouts-per-nine, walks-per-nine and home runs-per-nine. A lack of good stuff is part of the problem, as FanGraphs' Stuff+ metric generally sees their pitchers' offerings as below average.
Dominance from the (Gage) Jump!

In addition to a good fastball, Jump has both a good curveball and a good slider. He also messes around with a sweeper and a changeup. It's a diverse arsenal if nothing else, and all five pitches had whiff rates over 30 percent for the Aviators.
If it's the bright side you want, Mariners fans, the odds still favor Seattle to win the AL West. Heck, the Mariners could be in first place as soon as Wednesday afternoon if they win the next two games of this week's series.
The A's were already too good to be considered a pushover, however. And now that they have Jump, that much more so.
