To Wrap Up 2020, Here are 5 of my Favorite Seattle Mariners Moments

Although we did not get to watch the Seattle Mariners celebrate a postseason clinch or a World Series trophy lift, there are still some great moments to look back on. To start things off, I will start from the bottom of my shortlist.

Seattle Mariners Top Moments No. 5 – Evan White’s Sliding Catch in Foul Territory

Evan White made some incredible defensive plays during his rookie season and choosing just one was tough. But out of all of his highlight plays during his Gold Glove campaign, the catch he made in early August is my favorite.

In the top of the ninth inning against the Colorado Rockies, Nolan Arenado came up with one out. Former Seattle Mariners reliever Taylor Williams threw a 0-1 slider on the outside part of the plate.

Arenado was fooled and hit a flair out into foul territory. It was hit into no man’s zone and Arenado probably thought it would drop and become an 0-2 count.

But Evan White had something else in mind. He made a long run into foul territory and made a sliding catch!

This was not some routine play, White was in a full sprint running towards foul territory while looking at the ball over his shoulder.

Shed Long Jr. who was playing second base was not even remotely close to it. Mallex Smith was on his way but only to pick up the ball after it dropped onto the ground.

This was one of many Gold Glove plays Evan White made. Imagine how many more times he will end up on Sportscenter.

Now, onto No. 4 on my list.

Kyle Lewis’ Moonshot on Seattle Mariners Opening Day

To say the least, Kyle Lewis got off to a rocking start in 2020. In his first at bat of the 2020 regular season, Kyle Lewis hit a towering home run.

Lewis stepped into the batter’s box to lead off the top of the second inning against the Houston Astros. The season had been delayed so fans were eager to watch the young Seattle Mariners team play, and Lewis answered their calls.

Future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander threw a mistake and Lewis made him pay. Kyle got a meaty fastball at the top of the inside corner and he got his hands inside it and destroyed the baseball.

I remember watching the game on the couch, and I just could not believe it. I mean he did it against Justin Verlander, in his first at bat.

The set the tone for Kyle Lewis’ 2020 season and put many people around the league on notice. I ranked this as one of Kyle Lewis’ most important moments in his AL Rookie of the Year campaign as well.

Now onto No. 3.

Marco Gonzales Dealt for the Seattle Mariners on August 31st

Marco Gonzales pitched like an All-Star in 2020, and he surely would have made his first All-Star game had there been one. During his career best season, Marco had one very memorable game against the Los Angeles Angels.

On the last day of August, Marco Gonzales threw his second complete game of his career. He held the Angels to just one run, and led the Seattle Mariners to a narrow 2-1 victory.

Gonzales limited the opposition to just four hits, and one walk. He struck out eight batters, while three of them were against Mike Trout.

Greg Johns also described the outing as:

a perfect ending to a roller-coaster road trip that included their decision to not play a game in San Diego as a statement in support of racial equality and then a series of deals that saw five teammates traded away, including Gonzales’ close friend and workout partner Austin Nola

Marco finished 2020 with a 3.10 ERA and this outing probably gave him some extra confidence going into the final stretch of the 2020 regular season.

Now onto No. 2 on my list.

The Seattle Mariners “Ironman” Hits his 200th Home Run

Kyle Seager is arguably the best Seattle Mariners third baseman ever, and he was able to reach the 200 home run milestone this past season. In early August, Kyle was able to hit a 1-1 pitch into the right field stands.

The fan favorite continues to produce as a veteran and has not really slowed down. It was great to watch him make history this past season and continue his impressive career with the Seattle Mariners.

The 2014 All-Star and Gold Glove winner joins an impressive group of Mariners players. Kyle joins Ken Griffey Jr., Edgar Martinez, and Jay Buhner as the only players to hit at least 200 home runs in a Seattle Mariners uniform.

And as you already know, those three are in the Mariners Hall of Fame, and Kyle Seager will surely be joining them in the future.

Seager also reached the 700 RBI mark during 2020, so his history breaking days may be over but he will continue to be an important player for the Mariners.

Now, onto the top moment of 2020. Any guesses?

Kyle Lewis Robs a Grand Slam to Get the Seattle Mariners Out of a Jam

More from Mariners News

I am sure all of you remember watching this, or at least watching a highlight of this…. It was my favorite moment of the 2020 season.

First things first, there was extremely bad haze due to the wildfires. It looked sort of cool on television, but I can’t imagine what it was like for Kyle Lewis.

The Seattle Mariners got into an early jam and Ramon Laureano crushed a hanging curveball, and Kyle Lewis comes to the rescue.

I love listening to Dave Sims’ call and he said it best: “Wow! He made the catch. Oh baby!”

Kyle had a long ways to go and made a leaping grab by the Jimmy John’s sign to end the inning. This was the defensive play of the season for the Seattle Mariners, and it could have been for the entire MLB.

Not only was this an amazing play by Kyle, it helped him with his AL ROY bid. During September, he was struggling and lost a little traction. But, after making this play, he quickly reminded MLB fans that he is still looking to win the Rookie of the Year Award.

These are my 5 favorite moments from the 2020 Mariners season, and I am sure there are some more. Which ones did I miss? Let us know in the comments!
