This is what we heard last night as to why Nelson Cruz was leaving the series opener against the American League champion Kansas City Royals…
Nelson Cruz left tonight's game with a tight right hamstring. Dustin Ackley pinch-hit for Cruz in the 7th inning.

And this is what we heard from Lloyd McClendon after the game and this morning.

McClendon says he was told the injury is not serious and is not long term, according to Andrew Erickson of MLB.com.
“I’m not sure how to describe it, but his pelvic bone kind of popped out of place and he had some discomfort,” McClendon said in the same Erickson piece. “He’s OK now but we’ll see how he feels tomorrow.”
In my opinion, I’m betting that Cruz will sit out tonight. It’s a loss to the lineup that the light-hitting Mariners can not really afford, especially against the great-pitching Royals, but they also can’t afford to risk losing Cruz for more days. You would hope the M’s can find enough offense to hit Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie, but after losing to Joe Blanton, who knows…

Cruz, in the first-year of a four-year contract, is hitting .313 with 19 home runs and 44 RBIs. He’s been among the lone bright spots on the offensive side for the M’s, although he has cooled off significantly since a torrid start.
Cruz has seen his average drop from .328 to .313 in the last 10 games. He has only two multi-hit games in that time and has gone hitless in five games during that stretch.
The M’s need him to get healthy and they need him to perform again.
