Teams are evaluating their rosters as the 2025 MLB season approaches, and several under-the-radar players are making strong cases for inclusion on Opening Day. One such player for the Seattle Mariners is Rowdy Tellez, who recently signed a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training.
According to Daniel Kramer of MLB.com, Tellez is even a dark horse to crack the Mariners' Opening Day roster.
Tellez, a 6-foot-4, 270-pound slugger, brings a wealth of experience and power to the Mariners' camp. His arrival adds depth to Seattle's lineup, particularly at first base and designated hitter. Given his track record, Tellez could be a valuable asset, especially if he showcases his offensive prowess during Spring Training.
Rowdy Tellez a 'dark horse' candidate to capitalize on spring training invite, make Opening Day roster
The Mariners' roster is currently competitive. The team has invited a mix of homegrown, young players and seasoned players, including non-roster invitees, to camp, creating a wealth of competition this spring. Tellez's Major League experience and left-handed power could provide a unique advantage, potentially setting him apart from other candidates.

Seattle’s offense has been a weak point in recent seasons, and addressing that concern is a top priority heading into 2025. While the Mariners boast strong pitching, their lineup has struggled with consistency, particularly in generating power and getting on base. In 2024, the team ranked near the bottom of the league in several offensive categories, including batting average and OPS.
This is where Tellez could make a real impact. Though he had a down year in 2023 and 2024, he’s only a couple of seasons removed from a 35-homer campaign with the Brewers in 2022. When locked in, he’s a legitimate power threat, capable of punishing right-handed pitching and lengthening the lineup. Seattle could use another left-handed bat with pop, especially with the DH currently occupied by a trio of Donovan Solano, Mitch Garver and Mitch Haniger.
If Tellez performs well in Spring Training, he could force his way onto the roster as a platoon option at first base or DH. His situation is reminiscent of Mike Ford’s impact on the 2023 Mariners, when he provided unexpected power after being called up midseason. Ford slugged 16 home runs in just 83 games, giving Seattle a much-needed offensive boost.
Tellez has the potential to play a similar role, stepping in as a lefty power bat when the team needs it most. Whether he breaks camp with the big-league club or starts in Triple-A, he could become an important piece of Seattle’s lineup at some point in 2025.
