This has literally been a painful week for the Seattle Mariners, who are suddenly without two key hitters after injuries to right fielder Victor Robles and second baseman Ryan Bliss.
Yet even if only time heals all wounds, a W here and there can at least alleviate the pain. The Mariners got a couple of those this week against the Houston Astros to earn their first series victory of 2025, and they will now look to keep the momentum rolling against another AL West rival.

The Texas Rangers are rolling into Seattle for a three-game series against the Mariners over the weekend. There is a 4.0-game gap between the Rangers (9-4) and Mariners (5-8) in the standings, and the visitors will have a two-time Cy Young Award winner on the mound on Friday night.
Here's a look at the pitching matchup and likely starting lineups for Friday's contest, with first pitch set for 6:40 p.m. PT at T-Mobile Park.
Starting Pitchers
For the Mariners: Bryce Miller, RHP (0-2, 5.73 ERA)
It was Miller who led Mariners pitchers with 3.4 rWAR in 2024, throughout which he racked up a 2.94 ERA over 180.1 innings. He is still looking for momentum at the outset of 2025, as his two starts have featured plenty of traffic on the bases and seven runs over 11 innings.
The 26-year-old's fastball is down 0.7 mph from its average for last season, while his walk percentage is up from 6.4 to 10.4. These are concerning trends, and the Rangers have not been his favorite opponent in his three seasons with the Mariners. He has an 8.64 ERA against them in four starts.
As such, Miller has more to prove on Friday than most pitchers do just three outings into a new season.
For the Rangers: Jacob deGrom, RHP (0-0, 3.38 ERA)
It's Jacob deGrom. You know who he is, as his claims to fame are hardly limited to his two Cy Young Awards and his $185 million contract.
This is the 36-year-old's first full year since his second Tommy John surgery in 2023, and he does look like a different pitcher in some respects. Namely, his average fastball is "only" 96.3 mph and he's fanned just nine batters in 10.2 innings.
Of course, this is not to suggest that Mariners hitters will have it easy against deGrom. He's going to come right at them and dare them to hit his stuff, which is typically easier said than done.

What's at stake?
Even more so than the Astros series, this series is a chance for the Mariners to prove they are a player in the race for the AL West title. They can cut down the Rangers' lead by at least one and by as many as three games.
They'll need Miller to set the tone for Bryan Woo and Logan Gilbert for the games on Saturday and Sunday. Even more than that, though, the Mariners are still starving for offense. They're scoring only 3.38 runs per game and their outlook isn't exactly prettier sans Robles and Bliss.
Yet the same can also be said of the Rangers, who are scoring just 3.46 runs per game and are last in the American League with a .269 on-base percentage. They also had to place Wyatt Langford on the injured list this week, which is a break for the Mariners.
If it does prove to be true that the Mariners caught the Rangers at the right time, then a week that's been full of bad news will at least end on a positive note.
