Seattle Mariners probable pitchers & starting lineups vs. Detroit Tigers, April 2

The Mariners have already lost the series, so Wednesday's game is all about avoiding a sweep.

To say that the Seattle Mariners' second series of 2025 has been one to forget would be understating it. For fans, it has been almost entirely a miserable experience so far.

On Monday, Emerson Hancock got just two outs before getting yanked in the first inning of an eventual 9-6 loss to the Detroit Tigers. And on Tuesday, Victor Robles' leadoff single in the bottom of the first was the only hit Seattle mustered against Casey Mize and three relievers. The Mariners lost 4-1, dropping their record to 2-4 on the young season.

Hoping to do his part to the right the ship on Wednesday is Luis Castillo, but he'll be up against arguably the toughest of customers in reigning AL Cy Young Award winner (and former Seattle University star) Tarik Skubal. Besides, it's really the Mariners offense that needs to wake up.

With first pitch at T-Mobile Park set for 1:10 p.m. PT, here's a look at the probable pitchers and starting lineups for Wednesday's game and how to watch.

Starting Pitchers

For the Mariners: Luis Castillo, RHP (0-1)

Though the Mariners landed on the bad end of a 7-0 final score, Castillo was neither good nor bad in his 2025 debut opposite the Athletics on Friday. He was basically OK, pitching five innings and allowing two runs on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

After sitting at 95.6 mph in 2024, Castillo opened this year averaging 94.5 mph on his fastball. It isn't unusual for him to start slow and add velo as the year goes along, but this is still a concerning development. His velocity continues to trend below his peak of 97.4 mph from 2020, and the Tigers have been a solid fastball hitting team early on.

For the Tigers: Tarik Skubal, LHP (0-1)

Skubal is coming off a truly monstrous 2024 season, notably winning the pitching triple crown with 18 wins, a 2.39 ERA, and 228 strikeouts. He was particularly nasty in day games, fanning 11.6 batters per nine innings in those compared to 10.1 per nine innings in night games.

The lefty did have a rough outing to start his season against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, but it's best not to read too much into that. His average fastball was up to 97.2 mph, so Mariners hitters had better be prepared to get their swings going early.

What's at Stake?

This is the third game of a three-game set, so it's too late for the Mariners to win the series. The best they can hope for is to salvage some dignity.

To this end, what they need above all else is offense. They have scored four runs or fewer in five of their six games so far, with a .166 collective batting average that ranks last in the American League and ahead of only the Atlanta Braves for all of MLB.

Cal Raleigh and J.P. Crawford headline a list of six regulars with two or fewer hits on the young season. And while it's nice that both have an OPS over .800, Julio Rodríguez and Randy Arozarena are a combined 7-for-38 with 14 strikeouts.

According to FanGraphs, the Mariners have already ceded ground as the de facto favorite to win the AL West. There's obviously plenty of time to make up for that, but the threat of Skubal setting them back even further on Wednesday is very real.
