After a wildly successful 5-1 homestand against two AL West rivals, the Seattle Mariners have finally left the West Coast for a place that Luis Castillo used to call home.

Moreover, Castillo will be on the hill for the Mariners for the opener of their three-game set against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday. It's his first start back in Cincinnati since the Mariners acquired him in the summer of 2022, and is thus sure to have extra meaning for the three-time All-Star.

Tuesday is also Jackie Robinson Day around Major League Baseball. Everyone on the Mariners and Reds will be wearing a Dodger-blue No. 42 in honor of the Hall of Famer, whose debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers on this date in 1947 ended baseball's longstanding color barrier.

Ahead, we'll break down the starting pitching matchup, likely lineups, and viewing and listening options for Tuesday's game, with first pitch at Great American Ball Park set for 3:40 p.m. PT.

Starting Pitchers

For the Mariners: Luis Castillo, RHP (1-1, 2.12 ERA)

Castillo made 137 starts for the Reds between 2017 and 2022, racking up an excellent 125 ERA+ and garnering two of his three All-Star selections. The Mariners have gotten the better end of the deal that landed him in Seattle, as none of the four players that Cincinnati received have broken through.

The 32-year-old is continuing to show signs of decline in 2025, but the results are still there. He's gone at least five innings and allowed no more than two runs in each of his three starts, so it's not on him that the Mariners only have one win to show for his three outings.

Castillo is using his sinker more often this season, but his attack still revolves around his four-seam fastball. That will surely remain the case until it loses effectiveness, and it's doing A-OK in that department with a .167 average against.

For the Reds: Nick Lodolo, LHP (2-1, 0.96 ERA)

The Mariners will face a tough assignment against Lodolo. The lefty has only allowed two earned runs through 18.2 innings, with one walk and one home run allowed.

Lodolo will aim to keep Seattle hitters guessing. Unlike the fastball-happy Castillo, he's throwing four different pitches at least 20 percent of the time. The four-seamer has been hittable to the tune of a .455 average, but his sinker, curve, and changeup have a combined .125 average.

The catch with Lodolo is that he isn't missing bats, as he's fanned only eight batters all year. That's a dangerous recipe at Great American Ball Park, where home runs are more likely to happen than at any other stadium.

What's At Stake?

After last week's homestand evened the Mariners' record at 8-8, the team will now try to get over .500 for the first time since it was 1-0 after a thrilling win on Opening Day.

Getting enough offense continues to be an issue for the Mariners, and the long absences of Victor Robles and Ryan Bliss aren't going to make it any easier to score runs. Yet there were positive signs last week, including clutch hitting by Rodríguez and Arozarena and Raleigh using a new torpedo bat to go deep in all three games of Seattle's sweep of the Texas Rangers.

The Mariners begin Tuesday only 1.5 games out of first place in the AL West. If they keep their momentum rolling, it's possible that first place will be all theirs by the end of the series on Thursday.
