On Sunday, the Seattle Mariners will look to salvage a split in a four-game set against the Athletics that started strong before getting very, very frustrating.

The Mariners won the opener on Thursday in thrilling fashion, but then got shut out in a 7-0 loss on Friday and beat again in a 4-2 defeat on Saturday. The lack of offense is an unavoidable theme, as Seattle has scored in just four innings in the series so far.

The Mariners will hope to even both the series and their record in their first day game of the season, as Sunday's tilt at T-Mobile Park will start at 1:10 p.m. PT. Here's a look at the probable pitchers and starting lineups.

Starting Pitchers

For the Mariners: Bryan Woo, RHP (0-0)

Though Woo has yet to make his first start of 2025, it already feels like he's becoming less underrated. He's gotten all sorts of national media attention in recent weeks, which is fine by us. The 25-year-old Oakland native was dominant in 22 starts last year, with one metric rating his effectiveness on par with that of Tarik Skubal. Four-seamers and sinkers are his bread and butter, and will continue to be until hitters make him adjust.

For the Athletics: JP Sears, LHP (0-0)

A left-handed starter with a low-90s fastball? That has weirdly been a recipe for disaster for Mariners hitters of late, including against Jeffrey Springs on Friday. The 29-year-old Sears otherwise functions as a bulk guy for the A's, eating plenty of innings but not really excelling in run prevention. He has a 91 ERA+ to show for the last two seasons, and in 2024 he had one of the lowest strikeout rates (i.e., 18.1 percent) among qualified starters.

What's at Stake?

It's a long season, so not all will be lost if the Mariners lose Sunday and have their record drop to 1-3. They'll still have 158 games to redeem themselves.

It is worth noting, however, that the Mariners' slow start has already rearranged the power dynamic in the AL West. According to FanGraphs, they've gone from being the favorites to win the division on Opening Day to now looking up at the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros in this regard.

These odds don't mean anything, necessarily, but they are a reminder that 162 games also equals 162 chances for momentum to swing. It has clearly swung against the Mariners in the last two days, and it is clearly in their interest to swing it back the other way.

To this end, getting the offense going would be a good place to start.
