Resurgent Bryan Woo could be Mariners' secret weapon in AL West pursuit

Bryan Woo is set to return to the mound on Wednesday at T-Mobile Park as the Mariners close out their series against the Philadelphia Phillies. And with Seattle pushing toward an AL West title, Woo could be exactly the secret weapon that the Mariners need.

The 26-year-old right-hander's return comes at a pretty important time for a Mariners team that has seemed to face one obstacle after another, especially when they begin to build any sort of momentum.

Woo recently reported discomfort in his throwing shoulder, raising questions about when or even if he would be able to take the mound again this season. After taking some time off and working through the issue, Woo reportedly feels "100% confident" that he is ready to return.

“Bryan feels great,” Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said after Woo threw a bullpen session on Sunday, according to Adam Jude of the Seattle Times. “No concerns on his part. He’ll get out there on Wednesday and hopefully get after it.”

It's hard to imagine a better time for Woo to return, and get back to the pitcher he has shown he can be, especially for the remainder of the 2026 season.

As has become almost routine for the Mariners this season, just when the team appears to find its rhythm, something comes along and derails their progress. This time, it was Woo's shoulder.

Before the injury concern, Woo had really begun to turn his season around. For much of the 2026 season, his home and road numbers told two completely different stories. Woo was a dominant force at home, posting a 1.96 ERA, while his struggles away from the Pacific Northwest were an ongoing concern, with him posting a 5.96 ERA on the road. The stark difference left plenty of questions, and Woo struggled to identify just what was creating such a contrast.

Lately, however, those questions have started to disappear.

Woo carried a 4.56 ERA through July, but since then has allowed just two runs across 18 innings in August. Even more encouraging, that stretch includes two starts on the road, suggesting he may have finally found a way to overcome that inconsistency he has faced away from T-Mobile Park.

A turnaround that could be crucial for Seattle. With the Mariners fighting for the AL West, each game is important, and they need Woo to be the All-Star-caliber pitcher they have known him to be in seasons prior, not just at home but on the road as well.

Wednesday will be a test of whether Woo's recent momentum can continue, even after a brief interruption. If he can come back healthy and carry his August form forward, the Mariners could be getting more than just a starting pitcher back. They could be getting a secret weapon poised for a postseason push.
