The Seattle Mariners had an active trade deadline in 2024, making six trades in total. The team traded two big leaguers away, but added four in an attempt to make a late postseason push.

While the postseason push ultimately failed, the trades still have a longer-term effect on the team's roster. With that in mind, let's regrade the Seattle Mariners' six trades from the 2024 trade deadline.

Grading the Mariners' 2024 trade deadline haul one year later

July 26th, 2024: Mariners trade Brody Hopkins, Aidan Smith and Ty Cummings to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Randy Arozarena

The Mariners' first trade of the 2024 deadline was also their most impactful. Randy Arozarena was expected to be a sparkplug to the Mariners' offense. A former All-Star, he arrived in Seattle as a roughly league-average hitter and then posted a 118 OPS+ over 54 games with the Mariners.

He's been even better in 2025, with an OPS+ of 136. He returned to the All-Star game and posted a 3.8 bWAR. If the Mariners make the playoffs in 2025, Arozarena will be a big reason why.

Meanwhile, the Rays accquired a trio of prospects who are still not in the big leagues. Aidan Smith was the biggest name, a former top-100 prospect. He's currently ranked by MLB Pipeline as the Rays' No. 5 prospect. Hopkins has climbed in the Rays system, now ranked as their No. 3 prospect. He has posted a 3.28 ERA in 19 starts in Double-A, and looks like a future MLB starter. Cummings, meanwhile, is currently unranked in the Rays system.

While Hopkins looks like he has the best chance to be a productive major leaguer, he is still at least a year away. This trade looks like a clear win for the Mariners, who added a player on pace for 5 bWAR in 2025.

July 26th: Mariners trade Ryne Stanek to the New York Mets in exchange for Rhylan Thomas

Stanek posted a 4.38 ERA with the Mariners in 2024 before they decided to sell him to the Mets in an effort to clear salary. Stanek was even worse with New York down the stretch, posting a 6.06 ERA in 17 games.

He's been better this year, with a 3.93 ERA over 42 appearances for the Mets after re-signing as a free agent. Still, he's been worth a total of -0.7 bWAR for New York. Seattle gained Rhylan Thomas, a Triple-A outfielder who was briefly called up and started two games in right field for the Mariners. Although it's hard to say Seattle got better from this trade, they did successfully trade a reliever with negative value and shed his contract.

GRADE: B

July 29th: Mariners trade RJ Schreck to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for Justin Turner

When you have the opportunity to trade a 24-year-old, unranked prospect for an established MLB veteran, you take it every time. The Mariners seized the opportunity when they traded Schreck to Toronto for Turner. Schreck is playing well in Triple-A this year, with a .922 OPS, and he could be a major leaguer eventually. However, he's not in the Blue Jays Top-30, and would be considered a lottery ticket prospect at best.

Meanwhile, the Mariners got Turner, who was productive for them down the stretch. He had a 128 OPS+ and was worth 1.2 bWAR in 48 games, playing mostly at 1B and DH. While the deal does not affect the Mariners long-term, it achieved its purpose masterfully, adding a productive bat to a lineup that needed it.

GRADE: A

July 29th: Mariners trade Ty France to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for Andruw Salcedo

This trade was essentially a salary dump of France. The Mariners acquired Salcedo, a 22-year-old catcher in rookie ball. The chances Salcedo ever plays in the big leagues are slim to none.

Once again, the Mariners successfully achieved their goal. France, who had a 97 OPS+ for the Mariners at the time of the trade, got worse in Cincinnati, where he posted an OPS+ of 85 down the stretch in 2024. He's only been marginally better in 2025 for the Minnesota Twins after signing with them on a one-year deal.

GRADE: A

July 26th: Mariners trade Jonatan Clase and Jacob Sharp to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for Yimi García

This one hurts, not because of the players Seattle gave up, but because of the disappointment that was Yimi García. The Blue Jays received Clase, a fringe prospect known for his blazing speed. Clase did not hit well in his stint with the Mariners in 2024 (36 OPS+), and while he's been better with the Blue Jays (86 OPS+), he's still not a productive MLB player.

Unfortunately for the Mariners, Garcia turned out to be a bust. He made just 10 appearances for Seattle and held a 6.00 ERA. He re-signed with Toronto in the offseason and has been much better in 2025.

GRADE: D

July 30th: Mariners trade Will Schomberg to the Miami Marlins for JT Chargois

Another lottery-ticket prospect, Schomberg is a 24-year-old pitching in High-A. The Mariners flipped him for Chargois, who had a 2.75 ERA in 21 appearances down the stretch in 2024. He played well, and the team essentially gave up nothing for him.
