Seattle Mariners Probable Pitchers & Starting Lineups vs. Cincinnati Reds, April 17
After clinching their first series win of the season yesterday, the Mariners look to sweep the Reds at home.
The Mariners are in the midst of their best stretch of the season behind an excellent run from the pitching staff and progression from the complete ineptitude showcased by the lineup to start the season. Yesterday saw Seattle clinch the series victory against Cincinnati. We've seen a high-scoring victory from the Mariners and a low-scoring victory backed by great pitching and spectacular defense. Will the Mariners be able to complete the sweep?
Probable Starting Pitchers
Bryce Miller (2-1, 1.96 ERA, 17 Ks)
Miller has been one of the top arms in the MLB this season, ranking 14th in the league in ERA. He has allowed no runs in 15.1 innings over his last two starts, striking out eleven batters. To continue to keep his ERA low, however, he will need to avoid walks, as he allowed three in his most recent start. The Mariners just broke their franchise record for not allowing walks, and the hope is that Miller gets them back on track in that department by limiting free passes to Cinci.
Andrew Abbott (1-1, 2.60 ERA, 11 Ks)
After a strong rookie season, Abbott has brought that momentum into 2024. He has not struck many batters out, which may bode well for the Mariners. Where he does excel is limiting walks and generating weak contact, as the average exit velocity of opposing hitters has not reached 90mph in any of his three starts this season. For some of the Mariners who are struggling at the plate, seeing the relative soft-tossing Abbott after the flamethrowing Greene could be a blessing.
