The Mariners have a chance to win an important series today against the Oakland Athletics. The A's proved that they are not as bad as people think in last night's game, as they throttled the Mariners by a score of 8-1. In the first game of the series, funny enough, the Mariners beat the A's by the same score, 8-1. The A's can hit, and they have a good bullpen.

The Mariners' offense is about as inconsistent as can be, and that showed last night, with the M's getting just 3 hits all night. Over the last 7 games, the Mariners have just 3 players hitting over .280: Josh Rojas (.367), Dylan Moore (.300), and Luke Raley (.294). If the Mariners take today's game against the A's, they will need the offense to step up and start to steer the ship in the right direction.

Mariners Vs. Athletics probable pitchers

  • The Mariners will turn to their ace, Luis Castillo, for today's game. Castillo (3-5, 3.35 ERA) will make his ninth start of the season and his sixth start in his career against the Athletics. In his career, Castillo has a 3-2 record, with a 3.45 ERA against the A's. Castillo has a really slow start to the season, allowing four earned runs in each of his first three starts. Since then, he has an ERA of 1.65 with a FIP of 2.67, and opponents are hitting just .158 over that span. I look for Luis to continue the dominance he has had over the last month or so, and the Mariners will need him to be just that today.
  • As for the Athletics, they will send veteran lefty Alex Wood to the hill. Wood (1-2, 5.30 ERA) has struggled so far this season. While the standard pitching stats look bad, the underlying numbers are just downright bad for the lefty. According to his Baseball Savant page, Wood is due for a serious blow-up game. He is in the single-digit percentile in just about every category, including average exit velocity (5th percentile) and Chase percentage (3rd percentile). The Mariners may not face a worse pitcher than Wood for a while, so they will need to take advantage while they can.

Game Notes for today's game

  • A's broadcaster Dallas Braden threw a perfect game on Mother's Day back in 2010 against the Tampa Bay Rays. It was the 19th perfect game in baseball history.
  • A's outfielder JJ Bleday is the only current Athletic to ever hit a home run off of Luis Castillo
  • Even though Alex Wood has pitched in the Major's for 12+ seasons, only Mitch Garver, Jorge Polanco, Josh Rojas, Luis Urias and Seby Zavala have ever faced Wood.

Happy Mothers Day to all of the moms out there, and as always, Go Mariners!
