Seattle Mariners probable pitchers and starting lineups vs. New York Yankees, May 21

The Mariners started last night’s game slowly and then scored enough runs to beat the Yankees in the ninth inning and snap New York’s seven-game winning streak. Tonight’s game will be the second in this four-game series.

After losing a series to the second-best team in the American League East over the weekend, the Mariners faced the first-place team in this division. Last night, the Mariners scored no runs until Dom Canzone’s home run in the eighth inning. In the top of the ninth inning, with a combination of singles and walks, the Mariners scored four more times to win 5-4. J.P. Crawford’s entrance late in the game was a bonus, signaling his return from injury

Probable Pitchers for Tonight’s Game

  • The Mariners will send RHP Bryan Woo to the mound in the stadium where he had his first win in 2023. In that game, he pitched into the sixth inning and allowed only two hits, no runs, and three walks. He struck five players out. This will be his third start this season, as his arm has required some time on the Injured List. Baseball Savant has determined that batters’ average against Woo’s fastball and sinker are .111 and .167, respectively. Opposing batters have had more success with his slider. Woo enters the game with a .62 ERA. I look forward to seeing Woo pitch successfully as he did earlier this month against Oakland and Kansas City.
  • RHP Clarke Schmidt will pitch for the Yankees. In his fifth year with New York, he has pitched 50.2 innings, allowing 42 hits, 15 runs, 15 walks, and striking out 55 batters. In his most recent game, Schmidt had eight shutout innings against the Twins, his career best. Schmidt throws a 92 MPH cutter, an 85 MPH sweeper, a 94 MPH sinker, an 84 MPH Knuckle Curveball, and an 87 MPH Changeup. He stopped pitching a fastball after 2022.
