Today is the rubber match against the Baltimore Orioles, and with a win today, the Mariners have a chance to win a road series against one of the best teams in all of baseball. The Mariners won yesterday's game by a score of 4-3 after getting their doors blown off in game one. Today's game may be the most important game of the season so far for these Mariners.

The Mariners still have a 1.5-game lead in the division over the Texas Rangers. Don't look now, but the Houston Astros could be coming. Entering Sunday, the Astros are now 20-26, only 5 games behind the Mariners. The Mariners need to continue to stack up wins and come out of this tough road trip with a .500 or better record.

Today's probable pitchers for May 19

  • George Kirby gets the start today for the Mariners. Kirby (4-3, 3.58 ERA) will be making his 10th start of the season. Kirby is coming off of one of his best starts of the season, where he threw seven innings of shutout baseball against the Kansas City Royals. While his career numbers against the Orioles are pretty good (1-2, 3.20 ERA), the Birds have tagged him for quite a few home runs. Current members of the Orioles have clubbed five home runs off of Kirby. He will need to be at his best today as he faces one of the best lineups in all of baseball.
  • As for the Orioles, they will give the ball to Corbin Burnes, one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. Burnes (3-2, 2.68 ERA) will also be making his 10th start of 2024. The Orioles acquired Burnes last offseason in a deal with the Milwaukee Brewers. He has won the Cy Young Award and has been to three All-Star Games. The Orioles, as a team, have lost Burnes' last four starts, with Burnes only being charged with two of those losses. In those four games, the Orioles offense only managed to score four total runs. Hopefully, they run into the same issue today against George Kirby.

Game notes

  • As I wrote earlier, George Kirby has given up five home runs against current Orioles. Adley Rutschman has hit one, while Anthony Santander has hit two off of Kirby. Both are not in the lineup today.
  • Cal Raleighis 1/1 with a home run against Corbin Burnes in his career.
  • Orioles star shortstop Gunnar Henderson has homered in each of the first two games in this series.
  • Ty France's 12 pitch at bat was the longest by any Mariner all season. It resulted in a game typing double.
