Scoreless in Seattle, A Castillo vs Cole showdown at #5 for the Mariners
This was a phenomenal pitching matchup between two great starters Luis Castillo (for the Mariners) and Gerrit Cole (of the Yankees). It was a rematch from the week prior when each of these pitchers faced off in a game where the Mariners rocked Cole for six runs in the first inning. The now-famous Nicky Scarlotta of TikTok was frustrated at Gerrit Cole for giving up three home runs to the “Seattle Marinahzzz”. However, in Seattle, the matchup was much closer for what would become a 2022 Mariners classic.
Gerrit Cole who struggled against the Mariners in New York was on point in Seattle. He would allow just four hits through seven innings of work, as he kept the Mariners scoreless, struck out eight, and walked none.
Luis Castillo was equally brilliant in his Seattle debut in front of 38,804 fans. As he gave up just three hits and two walks while striking out seven over eight scoreless innings pitched.
This game featured two of the best bullpens in baseball up to that point in the season. The game would come down to which bullpen would blink first.
While the Mariners were stymied by the Yankees ‘pen (they were held to one hit for five innings), New York could not stop running into outs (literally).
Eventually, the Mariners got a hit from Cal Raleigh to lead off the 12th inning putting runners at first and third. After a ground out by JP Crawford put runners at second and third with one out, the Yankees intentionally walked Sam Haggerty.
That set the stage for Luis Torrens who came to the plate with a chance to win the game. On an 0-2 count, Torrens laced a single to right field for game-winning walk-off RBI single to give the Mariners a 1-0 win over the Yankees!
Torrens walk-off single helped the Mariners to an eventual series win over the Yankees in Seattle. Although he would get sent down to AAA Tacoma later that week, Torrens gave Mariners fans a fantastic win over one of the best teams in the American League.
