The Seattle Mariners won their series opener against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night, the team’s eighth consecutive win, pulling it to within half a game of the final wild card spot in the American League.
Earlier this season, Seattle had been falling way short of preseason expectations, but the team looks poised to at least be in contention for a playoff spot down the stretch of 2023.
George Kirby (10-8, 3.32 ERA) gets the start for the Mariners in this game against Baltimore’s Cole Irving (1-3, 5.44 ERA). This will be Irvin’s first start since July 7, as he was moved to the bullpen for the past month.
Does Seattle have the edge in this game at home? Here’s how oddsmakers view these two squads on Saturday night:

It will be interesting to see how long Irvin goes in this game since he hasn’t pitched more than two innings in an outing since mid-July.
Even if he does give the O’s some length, I prefer backing the red-hot Mariners and Kirby in this game.
Baltimore has been great in 2023, but the team is due to regress a little bit after winning so many one-run games to start the season. Baltimore is 21-11 in those matchups.
Irvin has been better out of the bullpen, allowing just one unearned run in three appearances this month, but his full body of work in 2023 is concerning.
The team moved him to the ‘pen because of his struggles as a starter, where he posted a 5.45 ERA in eight outings.
Kirby, on the other hand, has allowed two or fewer runs in five of his seven starts since the beginning of July. I think the young righty can lead Seattle to win No. 9 in a row on Saturday.
