It is in fact list season. That time of year when we are in between the Hot Stove season and spring training. When various media outlets publish lists ranging from best at their positions to best pitching staffs, or in this case the best prospects. Major League Baseball Pipeline has spent the past two weeks diving into their positional rankings, which consequently ended up highlighting the top prospects in the game. They took it one step further and released their Top 100 list today.
The Mariners have four players on the coveted list, Cole Young (37), Harry Ford (38), Gabriel Gonzalez (79) and Colt Emerson (87). One of the most interesting things about this year's list is that three of the four are first round picks. Additionally, they were all selected in consecutive drafts with the five-tool backstop, Ford kicking it all off in 2020. If those three players reach their potential it could be a huge boon for the major league club mainly because they would all be on target to arrive at the same time.
It is somewhat surprising to see Gonzalez that high on the list considering his 2023 statistics were inflated by a nuclear early season run at Modesto. Once he was elevated to High-A Everett the hit tool came back to earth a bit. He does have youth going for him though as he just turned 20 this month.
MLB Pipeline releases a midseason update to the Top 100, which has the possibility to include Lazaro Montes and Jonatan Clase. Two more reasons to keep an eye on the next wave of talent down on the farm.
