Although the most impressive story of the night may have been Bryce Miller (which we will get to), we have to start off by talking about Randy Arozarena and what he did against his former team, the Tampa Bay Rays. As we all know, Arozarena had been mentioned for a long time in trade hopes by Mariners' fans and most people were ecstatic when Seattle finally got him at this year's deadline from the Rays.
Well, it didn't take long for Arozarena to do damage against Tampa in the series opener.
In the 3rd inning, Arozarena would catch a hanging cutter on the first pitch of his AB and smash it to the opposite field, and the ball's 104 MPH exit velo would be enough to carry it into the stands for a go-ahead 3-run homer to give the Mariners the early 4-1 lead. While Randy has been struggling a bit in the power department since he came to the Mariners, it was at the perfect time and against the perfect team.
Although it was done early, the Mariners never looked back thanks in part to that dominant performance by Bryce Miller. He ended up going 7 strong, giving up just two hits while striking out 10, tying a career-high. His lone mistake was a homer to Josh Lowe in the second inning.
This was actually Miller's sixth time going seven innings on the season, and all of those performances have been outstanding. This outing tied for his second-best outing of the year according to Game Score (79), and was exactly what the Mariners and Dan Wilson needed to kick off the series. Miller's ERA at home improved to an incredibly impressive 2.03 and gave him his 10th win of the season.
There was more good news for the Mariners as well, as Houston lost thanks to a Bryce Harper walk-off single in the 10th inning to give the Phillies the win over the Astros. The Mariners enter Tuesday 3.5 games back, and things are looking a little brighter in Seattle thanks to Arozarena and Miller. Now, let's hope they can keep it going for the rest of the series.
