The Mariners weren't done after acquiring Randy Arozarena, and all reports had them still looking to add bats in advance of the 2024 Trade Deadline. We didn't know the who or the what, or even which position the Mariners were still looking for, just that they were still actively and aggressively trying to improve their offense.
One of those supposed targets was Isaac Paredes. He was a big-time player at a position of need for the Mariners, and there were reports out there that they were having conversations about him. After already having traded for Arozarena from the Rays, it did seem unlikely they would make a second trade for a Rays player.
Then, Paredes was traded to the Cubs. Normally, this would be where the rumors and supposition end. Instead, the trade created a rumor for the Mariners.
The Mariners are still looking for a corner infielder
I'm not going to say it's shocking that the Mariners were trying to get Christopher Morel from the Cubs, but it is definitely surprising. I remember hearing it mentioned that he was an option at some point in time, but as with Arozarena, there were just no leaks or new rumors about him at all.
With just a day left to go until the deadline, it puts Mariners' fans into overdrive trying to think who the team could be going after at the hot corner (or first, for that matter). Are they still trying to go big and get someone like Vladimir Guerrero Jr? With the news that the Giants might be looking to offload salary, could Matt Chapman be an option? Or would it be a smaller-name player, someone with versatility, a lower salary, or more control?
It's tough, because there are a lot of options out there even with it being a seller's market. There just is going to likely be a high cost associated with anyone who moves, whether it is acquired salary, prospect value, or a mix of both. As rumors rise, make sure to stay tuned.
