After losing game one in devastating fashion to the Houston Astros, the Mariners came back and shut them out 5-0 in yesterday's ballgame. Logan Gilbert (3-0, 1.69 ERA) looked like the best pitcher on the staff, and that is really saying something. He pitched eight shutout innings, while only giving up two hits and striking out six. He did walk four batters, but none of them came around to score.
With the series split so far, the Mariners will need another big game from today's starter Bryce Miller. Mariners starters are tied for second in Major League Baseball history with 21 games in a row of the starting pitchers letting opponents score 2 or fewer runs. That is an insane stat and a testament to just how good this pitching staff really is.
Probable starting pitchers
- Bryce Miller (3-2, 2.04 ERA) will toe the slab for the Mariners today. Bryce will once again be pitching in his home state of Texas, where he did take a loss down in Arlington against the Rangers earlier this year. Bryce has had success against his childhood favorite team, the Houston Astros, in his career. He is 2-1 with a 2.20 ERA in his short career against the Astros, giving up just two home runs in his 16.1 innings.
- As for the Astros, they will send Hunter Brown to the hill for his seventh start of 2024. Brown (0-4, 9.78 ERA), has struggled to put it nicely. Nothing seems to be working for him this year. He is averaging 14.5 hits per 9 innings and has a 2.21 WHIP to go along with that huge earned run average. His 5.5 BB/9 is the highest of his career and something that the Mariners need to take advantage of. The Mariners have dominated Brown in his two career starts against the Mariners, as he has given up 11 runs in 5.2 innings against the good guys.
