The Mariners laid a smackdown on the Rangers last night, winning 4-0. Logan Gilbert pitched an absolute gem, throwing 6.2 innings of scoreless ball. Ryan Stanek, Gabe Speier, and Andres Munoz helped complete the shutout. Cal Raleigh hit his sixth home run, his second from the right side. Julio Rodriguez also clobbered a 2-run home run, his first of 2024.

The best way to win a series is to win the first game, which the Mariners did. That should be the goal this early on in the season, win the series. With the win last night, the mariner took sole position of first place in the American League West from the Texas Rangers by half a game. The Mariners are the only A.L. West team currently over .500, with a 12-11 record. For all of the bad that this team started 2024 with, they are in first place. Just incredible.

Probable pitchers for tonight, April 24

  • The Mariners starting pitcher tonight will be Bryce Miller. Miller (3-1, 1.85 ERA) is off to a torrid start, much like his 2023 big league start. His first start against the Red Sox was a tough one, as he gave up 4 runs in 5 innings. Since then, Miller has only given up 1 earned run over his last 3 starts (19.1 innings). Much has been said about his new pitch, the splitter. He leaned on fellow starters George Kirby and Logan Gilbert, who started throwing their splitter last season. Miller has dominated with that pitch, only allowing 3 base hits off of it all season.
  • As for the Rangers, they will turn to veteran Jon Gray. Gray (0-1, 3.15 ERA) has struggled some in 2024 so far. He has walked 10 batters in his 20 innings of work and has given up 18 hits. That works out to a 1.40 WHIP. He has been fortunate to not let the walks hurt him, but that is playing a dangerous game. The Mariners have been very patient over their last 10 or so games, and have been taking their walks. Look for the Mariners to really make Gray work tonight, and drive that pitch count up.
