While things have looked better for the Mariners over their last five games, it hasn't all been roses for the team as they battle back to try and make a playoff push into September. Their starting pitching has been one of the best in baseball all season but fans await with bated breath the results of an MRI on Luis Castillo after he was removed early from this weekend's start against the Cardinals.
It happened in the 4th inning of the game against the Cardinals. What makes it worse was the fact that it happened on a play where nothing happened. While that sounds funny at first to say, Castillo moved quickly to get out of the way on a throwdown to second on a stolen base attempt, but the throw never came.
Luis Castillo's season, and the Mariners, could await a single hamstring
He tried to stay in the game, but just couldn't do it. After two pitches, the trainers came to the mound and Castillo ended up leaving. The Mariners still have a nasty four-man rotation, but knowing that there was never an off night for the opposition made them all the more formidable. Now, Castillo awaits those MRI results to see if he is going to be able to return this season. He had an update for Adam Jude after the game.
"“The discomfort’s there... Tomorrow we’re going to get some [tests] done, just to see what it is, but hopefully it’s not too bad...From there, I just decided to stop, you know, to not make any worse""Luis Castillo
The Mariners don't have a ton of options to replace Castillo, but do have help coming up in their schedule. They have today (Monday the 9th) off, as well as Monday the 16th off. They could do some shfiting around to not need as many fill in starts as possible, but will still need to call someone up. There are a few options to take the spot. We could see Jhonathan Diaz, Emerson Hancock, or even Logan Evans fill-in for Castillo.
We await to see just how bad it is, and we all hope for the best. Not just as fans, but for the health of any injured player. Stay tuned for more updates on the health and injury status of Luis Castillo.
