It's that time of year again, and the first day of the 2024 MLB Draft is upon us. 2024 isn't going to be as exciting as 2023 was for the Mariners when they had an incredible 3(!) First Round picks. This year, they just have the one, and will be looking to replicate the success that they seem to have already found in the talent they acquired in Colt Emerson, Jonny Farmelo, and Tai Peete.
Not only that, but 2023 was exciting because the draft (and game) was held in Seattle, so it was neat watching all of the festivities take place surrounding the Mariners. Although they aren't nearly as involved this year, let's jump into it, and check out the who, what, where, when, why, and how (but not in that order) of the Mariners as they head into this year's draft.
How Mariners fans can watch the 2024 MLB Draft
The draft will be on MLB Network, MLB.TV, MLB.com, and the MLB app.
When does the Draft start?
The first round kicks off at 6PM ET/3 PM PT on Sunday, July 14th, with coverage of the event. The first pick will go on the clock an hour later at 7 ET/4 PT. Day 2 and Day 3 will be on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, both starting at 2PM ET/11AM PT each day.
Where is the Draft, and game, happening?
Gone of the days of the Draft happening in studio, as it now happens wherever the game is taking place. Last year it was in Seattle, and this year it moves to the division-rival Texas Rangers in Fort Worth, with the game happening Arlington.
What pick do the Mariners have?
The Mariners will have the 15th pick this season. They don't have any extra early ones this year, and actually traded away the one that they would've had by acquiring Gregory Santos last offseason, sending them the 68th pick as a part of the deal to get him.
Who could the Mariners select?
Could we see a college arm? What about a college bat? The Mariners are sitting in a nice spot at 15th where you could easily see someone around 10th on the draft boards fall. What this means is that the Mariners could just grab the best players available in order to boost their farm system.
Why should you watch the draft?
Personally, I love watching drafts. I don't pay a ton of attention to college sports, so watching the draft is a good way to learn about all of the top players that are coming into the game. MLB differs compared to the NFL and NBA as the top players could still be a few years away from playing in the Majors, with the rare Paul Skenes case being the exception to the rule.
Tune in and see who the Mariners are going to take, and it's a good way to get a jump start on learning about the newest Mariners!
