Welcome to our new players: which totals two position players/batters and four pitchers!

New Mariners Position Players/Batters

RHB 2B/3B/SS Luis Urías

Luis Urías came from Boston to the Mariners on Nov. 17 for RHP Isaiah Campbell. He will likely back up Cal Raleigh as Tom Murphy selected free agency. Luis is 26 years old and was born in Magdalena de Kino, Mexico. He made his MLB debut on August 28, 2018, in a game against Seattle, ironically. His career BA is .234.

Luis has played for the Padres and the Brewers. The Brewers traded Urías to Boston for a pitcher on Aug. 1, 2023. Luis’ brother Ramón plays the same positions as Luis does but for the Baltimore Orioles! Brothers, I am sorry you will be on teams so far away from each other.

RHB, Catcher Seby Zavala

Zavala came to Seattle Nov. 23 from Arizona, in the Geno trade. Seby Zavala is 30 years old and was born in Fort Hood, TX. The Chicago White Sox recruited him in the 2015 MLB June Amateur Draft from San Diego State University. (He is in the same alumni association as Ty France!)

Seby debuted in the MLB on May 25, 2019. On July 31, 2021, he became the first person to hit his first three home runs in the same game. (One of these HRs was a Grand Slam.)

The White Sox played the Yankees in the “Field of Dreams Game,” in Dyersville, IA. Zavala hit a 2-run home run and a walk-off home run in that game. Arizona claimed Zavala from the White Sox off waivers on September 6, 2023, and then traded him on November 23 to the Mariners. Seby had a down year in 2023 but he had a .270  batting average in 2022.

Mariners Pitching additions

RHP Cody Bolton

Cody came to Seattle on Nov. 2 from Pittsburgh as an under-the-radar acquisition. Cody Bolton is 25 years old and was born in Richmond, VA. He attended high school in Tracy, CA. The Pirates recruited him in the 2017 June Amateur Draft from Tracy High School. He is a rookie through 2024.

Bolton debuted April 29, 2023. He pitched 21.1 innings for the Pirates in 16 games with a 6.33 ERA. The Mariners acquired Cody from Pittsburgh for cash considerations. Though his start in Pittsburgh was a bit rough, he showed strength in the minors.

RHP Jackson Kowar

Jackson came to Seattle on Dec. 3 from Atlanta in the Kelenic trade.

Jackson Kowar is 27 years old and was born in Weddington, NC. The Kansas City Royals drafted Jackson in the 2018 June Amateur MLB draft from the University of Florida, where he spent three years and played in the College World Series in 2017 and 2018. Kowar played three years for the Royals. He made his debut on June 7, 2021. He was traded to Atlanta on November 17, 2023.

RHP Carlos Vargas

Carlos came to Seattle on November 22 from Arizona, alongside Zavala.

Carlos Vargas is 24 years old and was born in Moca, Dominican Republic. He had his debut on opening day, March 30, 2023, with Arizona. This past season, he pitched five games in the majors and spent the rest of the season in Reno.

RHP Cole Phillips

Cole came to Seattle on December 3 from Atlanta, alongside Kowar, in the Kelenic trade.

Cole Phillips is 20 years old and was born in San Diego, CA. He's arguably the best addition to the team so far this offseason. The Atlanta Braves recruited him in the 2022 June Amateur Draft out of Boerne High School. Cole was unlucky: he had Tommy John surgery and missed the 2022 and 2023 seasons. We will be eager to see him in action after his recovery!

Thank you for joining our team!!
