The Mariners finish up a three game series with AL West foe Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday after splitting the first two games of the series.
Seattle will face superstar Shohei Ohtani on Wednesday afternoon, and the team is a significant home underdog, but is that warranted given how the Angles have performed in Ohtani's starts? What about Mariners starter, Chris Flexen, can he continue his strong start to 2023?
Here are the odds for Wednesday's matchup:
Angels vs. Mariners odds, run line and total
Angels vs. Mariners prediction and pick
Ohtani is stellar, he dominated the Athletics' lowly lineup on Opening Day to the tune of six shutout innings and only two hits allowed, but the Halos lost 2-1. The Angels bullpen is consistently an issue for this team, bottom half of the league last season, and it's going to be the difference in this one.
The Mariners send out Flexen, who has a 3.64 ERA in three seasons with the team centered around his ability to generate soft contact. He operates as a long reliever at times, inlcuding his first appearance this season where he pitched four innings of one run baseball, and that's a testament to the Mariners' bullpen prowess. So far this season, Seattle is 11th in bullpen ERA this season across a small sample size, but the team was sixth last season.
Ultimately, this is too steep of a price to lay with Ohtani on the road given the fact that the Mariners are a better team elsewhere and Flexen has proven that he can hold his own for extended periods of time on the mound.
Take the home underdog on Wednesday.
