Just when it seemed like the Eugenio Suárez trade sweepstakes couldn’t get any more dramatic, a new suitor has entered the fray, and it’s the last team Seattle Mariners fans wanted to see.
According to multiple reports via MLB.com, the Houston Astros have emerged as a legitimate threat to land Suárez ahead of the MLB trade deadline. With the Mariners, Chicago Cubs, New York Mets and other teams already circling, this latest development could quickly become the Mariners’ worst-case scenario. Because as it turns out, not only is Suárez still very much available — he could very well be launching homers against the Mariners inside Daikin Park.
Mariners in danger of losing Eugenio Suárez to division rival Astros
The Astros’ interest makes perfect sense. On July 19th, their everyday third baseman Isaac Paredes went down with an injury (against the Mariners, no less) and the outlook has only gotten worse. Chandler Rome of The Athletic reported that what was once thought to be a minor setback is now being described as more severe than initially believed.
That brings the tally to nine Astros position players currently on the injured list, five of whom were part of their Opening Day lineup. And yet, they’re still clinging to first place in the AL West. Their ability to withstand so many blows is remarkable, but now Houston has every reason to swing big.
Suárez has been red-hot in recent weeks and still has plenty of pop in his bat. His 36 home runs so far this season are proof. Imagine what that kind of momentum looks like when you drop him into Daikin Park. He could spend half of the remaining season aiming at the Crawford Boxes in left field, meaning one of the league’s friendliest dimensions for right-handed hitters would likely become a playground for Suárez’s towering fly balls.
Just watch below, even though the home run was in Arizona, we can still admire him hitting a towering shot off Houston.

Are you not entertained? We'd much rather see that act in Mariners colors. In a year where the Mariners have struggled for consistent offense, seeing a fan favorite and former clubhouse leader traded to a division rival would sting — and particularly if that team is Houston.
While the Astros’ farm system doesn’t have the depth to win a bidding war with Seattle, they have just enough talent and motivation to make things interesting, especially if desperation kicks in.
The good news? Seattle is still firmly in the mix. The latest reports suggest the Diamondbacks had discussions with the Yankees that stalled due to Arizona’s asking price: one major league-ready player, one upper-level prospect, and a lower-level lottery ticket.
Trade talks between the Yankees and Diamondbacks over Eugenio Suárez stalled after Arizona asked for a MLB player, an upper-level prospect (AA/AAA), and at least one lower-level prospect, per industry sources.

Yankees still holding tight to top farm talent.
That’s not an unreasonable ask for a Geno’s production. And it’s certainly a price the Mariners can afford, assuming Arizona doesn’t get overly greedy.
