The Seattle Mariners have made yet another minor addition, this time by adding another possible reliever to their bullpen. And a familiar one at that! This organization loves bringing back former players.

Over the weekend, the Mariners signed right-handed reliever Trevor Gott to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training. Gott previously pitched for the Mariners in 2023 before being traded midseason.

Gott's initial stint with Seattle in 2023 showcased his reliability and effectiveness out of the bullpen. He consistently delivered solid performances, earning the trust of the former manager Scott Servais and fans alike.

However, on July 3, 2023, the Mariners traded Gott and pitcher Chris Flexen to the New York Mets in exchange for left-hander Zach Muckenhirn. This trade was primarily a salary dump, allowing Seattle to get rid of the remaining $4 million on Flexen's contract. The Mets, in turn, designated Flexen for assignment immediately after the trade.

Mariners add Trevor Gott to spring training roster on a minor league deal as he recovers from Tommy John surgery

Unfortunately for Gott, in March 2024, while with the Oakland Athletics, he suffered a fully torn ulnar collateral ligament, resulting in Tommy John surgery. This injury sidelined him for the entire 2024 season, and it's expected to impact part of his 2025 season as well.

Despite this setback, the Mariners have shown faith in Gott's ability to rebound by bringing him back into the fold. His return adds depth to Seattle's bullpen, which already boasts a mix of seasoned veterans looking to reestablish themselves alongside promising young arms. Gott's experience and prior success with the team could prove invaluable as he works his way back to full strength.

While his injury history presents challenges, the Mariners' decision to offer him a minor league deal with a spring training invite is a low-risk, high-reward move. It's a testament to the organization's commitment to continuously building a resilient and versatile bullpen, one that a new manager like Dan Wilson can depend on throughout the year.

Gott will never be a high-leverage option, but if he can stay healthy his funky lower arm slot potentially gives the Mariners a dependable arm with a different look. This move won't be the one that wins the American League West, but it could be one that proves to be valuable come August.
