If the Seattle Mariners are serious about contending in 2025 while also building a sustainable core for the future, Jarren Duran might be the perfect match for them ahead of the July 31 trade deadline.
The 28-year-old Boston Red Sox outfielder offers something the Mariners desperately need: dynamic athleticism and offensive versatility from the left side. His elite speed, improving bat, and ability to impact the game in multiple ways would inject life into a Seattle offense that has been inconsistent for much of the season.
Jarren Duran suits the Mariners perfectly, and he might actually be available
Duran's status as a trade candidate has risen above merely speculative to become seemingly very real.
One American League executive told Jayson Stark of The Athletic that Duran is "the most likely" of Boston's outfielders to get traded. And on Sunday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reported that the San Diego Padres "remain enamored" with Duran and pondered that the Red Sox's outfield surplus could make the 2024 All-Star expendable.
Duran isn’t just a flashy name on a big-market team. He’s a true impact player in the heart of his prime. He’s under club control through the 2028 season, aligning perfectly with Seattle’s vision of acquiring players who can contribute now and over the long haul, a la Luis Castillo and Randy Arozarena. The Athletic recently ranked him as the No. 1 overall player potentially available at the deadline, which speaks volumes about his value. He brings a blend of elite sprint speed, good defense, solid contact ability, and enough pop to be a real threat at the top of a lineup.

The Mariners’ front office has long been attracted to players like Duran, who check the boxes of team control, athleticism, and defensive flexibility. As a strong defender capable of playing all three outfield spots, Duran could provide a long-term solution in center field (if the team opts to save Julio Rodríguez's body as he ages) or slot in at a corner depending on how the roster evolves.
He’d also immediately become one of the most athletic players on the team, something Seattle’s current group sorely lacks. Though his .258/.318/.431 slash line and 103 wRC+ is considered a down year compared to his 2023 and 2024 seasons, he is still a really good player who would be a massive upgrade in the Mariners outfield.
While the cost to acquire Duran will be significant, it’s a deal the Mariners could and perhaps should make. Their farm is as deep as any team's and their window of contention is widening. They just added one of the top talents in the draft, infusing even more elite talent to a system featuring as many as nine top 100 prospects.
Seattle and Boston have already had extensive trade conversations dating back to the offseason, so both teams should be very familiar with each other’s farm systems. That comfort could help streamline negotiations. The Red Sox are on the fringes of the playoff picture in a crowded AL East and could look to capitalize on Duran’s peak value to address other needs.
For Seattle, adding Duran wouldn’t just be about making a playoff push this year, it would be about adding a core piece to a young roster that’s already built around Rodríguez, Cal Raleigh, George Kirby, and Logan Gilbert. Duran may be expensive, but landing him is exactly the kind of high-upside move that could elevate the Mariners from fringe contender to legitimate threat in the American League.
