Mariners broadcast's incredulous Jo Adell call perfectly captures night of angst

Stop it, indeed.

Starting on Friday night, Seattle Mariners fans found themselves on an emotional roller coaster that had everyone hanging on for dear life even before Jo Adell sent it careening off the rails. The only appropriate reaction was basically the one that Aaron Goldsmith and Angie Mentink had.

The Mariners lost 1-0 to the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night, but would have won 3-1 had it not been for Adell's glove out in right field. Three home run robberies? In one night? And in just nine innings? Nuh uh. You gotta be kidding me.

Or as Goldsmith said not once, but twice after Adell followed earlier robberies of Cal Raleigh and Josh Naylor with another of J.P Crawford in the ninth inning, "There's no way!" That plus the barely audible "Stop it" from Mentink was just pitch perfect for a moment when it truly felt like the baseball gods were punking the Mariners.

Shoutout to Goldsmith for not moping about Adell denying the Mariners what would have been a hard-fought victory. His initial incredulousness giving way to pure amazement was entirely appropriate given the obvious historicity of the moment.

Still, though, a loss like that is not what the Mariners needed after all that had happened leading up to it.

Before Adell's triple home run thievery, the Mariners also got three injury scares

Even before the final out of Saturday's game — which dropped Seattle's record to 4-5 — was squeezed, Mariners fans had already been through the wringer with what happened first to Brendan Donovan in Anaheim and then to Colt Emerson and Lazaro Montes in El Paso.

Donovan had to leave Friday's extra-innings 3-1 win early after trying to leg out an infield hit, resulting in a tense wait for news of a possible IL stint. He's thankfully only day-to-day with a groin issue, with Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reporting that MRI results came back clean.

The potential silver lining of an injury to Donovan was that it might have been an excuse to call up Colt Emerson, who just signed a $95 million contract. But then he also had an injury scare, leaving the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers' game against the Chihuahuas after fouling a ball off his right foot.

This, too, is thankfully a non-disaster. As Divish further noted in his report, X-rays came back negative and the 20-year-old is day-to-day.

Just as MLB Pipeline's No. 1 prospect for the Mariners avoided serious injury on Saturday, so did the club's No. 4 prospect. Montes was down after running into a wall and had to be looked at by Tacoma's trainer, but was able to stay in the game.

So to recap, in a span of about 24 hours the Mariners A) recorded a dramatic win, B) survived three injury scares and C) took a one-run loss courtesy of a brilliant defensive outing by a notoriously bad outfielder.

Whether or not they had all of that in mind at the time, Goldsmith and Mentink were certainly all of us as they watched Adell emerge from the stands with that last ball.
