As the MLB offseason dominoes continue to fall, the Seattle Mariners have yet to snag their own winter headlines ... besides, of course, being involved in various trade rumors that haven't exactly been too appealing.
Seattle fans are still waiting on the M’s front office to make a notable move this December. However, this week, Jerry Dipoto and Co. might have a number of Green Bay Packers fans to thank for taking some of the local spotlight off them.
There were many uncertainties heading into this season for the Seattle Seahawks. After all, it is the franchise’s first season in 15 years without Pete Carroll at the helm. The one given for this year was that the 12’s would still show up for this team. Or, at least, that was the expectation ... until this past Sunday night when the Packers came to town.
The Hawks fell to 0-3 in primetime games this season after getting dismantled by Green Bay, 30-13. To add insult to Geno Smith’s third-quarter knee injury, there were far too many happy Cheeseheads in attendance for this one.
Prior to kickoff, the Seahawks had sole possession of first place in the NFC West. But you wouldn’t have known it by the sea of green and gold, or the “Go Pack Go!” chants at Lumen Field.
Now, Seattle sits in a tie for first place with the LA Rams after that brutal loss. Oh, by the way, the (12-2) Minnesota Vikings are about to make their way into town this weekend. Do Seahawks fans want to show up for that one, or will they let traveling Vikings fans take over their home turf?
The Seahawks have one of the best home-field advantages in the NFL, so the letdown this past week could loom large in the NFC playoff picture when all is said and done. And for crying out loud, Seattle fans can't deal with much more self-inflicted heartbreak.
Much like their neighbors across the street, the Mariners know all too well what it’s like to be chasing a postseason berth with just a few weeks left in a season.
So, while the Seahawks and their fans take a long look in the mirror this week, there is no time like the present for the M’s to make their first big splash of the offseason. Dipoto should strike as the offseason quiet has set in, and while he has a window with the Seattle ire directed towards the Seahawks.
