Andrés Muñoz was one of the best relievers in baseball in 2024, playing a crucial role in the Seattle Mariners’ bullpen.

He posted a 2.12 ERA over 59.1 innings, striking out 77 batters while holding opponents to a .153 batting average. His WHIP was an impressive 0.96, and he racked up 22 saves as Seattle’s primary closer. His numbers alone make a strong case for him as one of the best relievers in baseball.

Yet to hear it from one national writer, Muñoz doesn't make the cut.

ESPN's Buster Olney mistakenly leaves Andres Munoz off his list of top 10 relievers

ESPN’s Buster Olney has been going through his top 10 players at each position recently. While he has given favorable rankings to Mariners players like Julio Rodríguez (No. 1 center fielder) and Cal Raleigh (No. 3 catcher, though you could argue he should be higher), he recently released his list of the top 10 relief pitchers for the 2025 season, and one name was shockingly missing: Muñoz.

Given how dominant Muñoz has been, leaving him off this list is a serious oversight.

The dependability and timely pitching from Muñoz have made him one of the best bullpen arms in the game and someone Mariners manager Dan Wilson will depend on a lot in 2025. He has consistently faced tough matchups in high-pressure situations and delivered. His triple-digit fastball and nasty slider make him nearly unhittable, and his new changeup should strike fear in every other team.

Muñoz was selected as an All-Star for the first time in 2024, a clear recognition of his talent. He was the anchor of Seattle’s bullpen, helping the team stay competitive in a tough American League. It’s hard to understand how someone with that kind of impact could be left off a list of the game’s top relievers.

Of course, rankings are subjective, and there are plenty of great relievers in MLB. But when looking at Olney’s list, it’s hard to argue that Muñoz doesn’t deserve a spot. If he continues to perform at his usual level in 2025, he’ll leave no doubt that he deserves consideration among the league’s best.

For Mariners fans, Muñoz’s omission from the rankings is frustrating. But ultimately, it doesn’t change what he means to the team. He remains one of the most dominant relievers in baseball and a key piece of Seattle’s success. Whether he gets national recognition or not, the Mariners know they have one of the best closers in the game.
