Landing Rafael Devers would be a game-changer for the Seattle Mariners, giving them the kind of superstar bat they’ve been missing. Devers is a proven slugger, a two-time All-Star, and a Silver Slugger winner who can crush the ball and instantly make the M’s lineup more dangerous. Adding him would not only give the team a legitimate middle-of-the-order threat, but it would also put them in a much stronger position to compete in the AL West.
Why are we even entertaining this? Because after the Red Sox signed Bregman, there seems to be some tension about who is going to be the everyday third baseman, something Devers is hesitant to concede.
Seattle has been looking for a consistent offensive force, and Devers fits the bill perfectly. Pairing him with guys like Julio Rodríguez would make this lineup a World Series contender and bonafide AL threat. Jerry Dipoto has struggled to put together an offense that can keep up with the likes of the Astros and Yankees, so this pie-in-the-sky opportunity should have him exploring any and all options.
Defensively, Devers won't blow anybody away. His presence would be a step back from the last two years of excellent defense we have seen from Eugenio Suarez and Josh Rojas. But his experience would bring more stability to the infield. And let’s be real, when you hit like Devers, teams can live with a few defensive missteps here and there. Not to mention, he's improved with the glove year over year.
Bleacher Report proposes Red Sox-Mariners trade for Rafael Devers
Of course, getting a player like Devers wouldn’t come cheap. The Mariners would probably have to give up some top prospects or a key piece from the current roster. It’s a tough call because the farm system is strong, but if Seattle is serious about making a deep playoff run, sometimes you have to take that big swing.
Then again ... we can't say Bleacher Report's recent trade proposal is something the Mariners would regret. Doesn't Dipoto make this deal 10 times out of 10?
Bleacher Reports Devers-Castillo Trade
Here, we have Boston finally acquiring Luis Castillo and top prospect Harry Ford in exchange for Devers. This gives the Red Sox an elite one-two punch with Castillo and Crochet, while also adding a solid top catching prospect where they now lack depth after trading Kyle Teel.
There is also the financial side of things with Devers being locked into a big contract (nine years and a little over $280 million remaining), so the Mariners would have to be willing to take that on. Believe it or not, this is probably a below-market deal ownership would be willing to take a chance on when you look at other mega contracts around the league.
At the end of the day, this is the kind of move that could change Seattle's fortunes. It’s risky, but bringing in a proven star like Devers would send a message that the Mariners are finally all in on winning. And that is exactly what Mariners fans have been asking for.
