The Seattle Mariners' offseason has been disappointingly quiet. With about a month away from pitchers and catchers reporting, this has been a complete failure by the front office. The lack of moves is further emphasized when you consider what the rest of the division has been able to do, mainly the Houston Astros. Even though they have traded Kyle Tucker and seemed to have lost BAlex regman, they quickly replaced those two with Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker.
Despite the inactivity, Jerry Dipoto and Justin Hollander have remained confident that they will be able to fill their needs. Hollander stated, "We usually don’t lack for activity, there just hasn’t been the right set of circumstances yet to allow us to add, but I’m confident we’ll get there.”
Well, the Mariners have certainly lacked activity. Waiting for the right set of circumstances to appear has caused a complete mismanaged offseason, resulting in virtually no impact added.
While the Mariners have missed the boat on pretty much every potential impact bat, there are still some options remaining, but a recent prediction from Bleacher Report has Seattle picking up some of the remaining scraps.
Bleacher Report predicts the Mariners will land Ha-Seong Kim
Kim entered free agency after declining his $8M mutual option with the San Diego Padres. He is a versatile defender that is capable of playing first, second, and third base at a very high level. He has also stolen 60 bases over the last two years, but it seems like Kim lacks the upside that this team needs.
"The Seattle Mariners have done next to nothing to improve an offense that wasted arguably the top starting rotation in baseball last season, and Kim alone would hardly rectify what was the 21st-ranked offense in terms of runs scored in 2024," Tim Kelly of B/R wrote.
Kim is a fine player, but the dependency on versatility and defense doesn't address the core issue for Seattle. The former Padres infielder wouldn't provide a big addition that could transform the way this offense is viewed. Kim being the second-best bat that Dipoto added this offseason would have been a massive win for Seattle, however, at this point, it seems like the addition of Kim would likely wrap up any major moves.
