Add A Fun Prospect in Rule 5 Draft

The Mariners have not taken as many fliers on players in the Rule 5 Draft in the past few years because they have not always had a roster spot to use on a flier-type of player. However, they could make a switch and do that this year. One player who out there brings significant intrigue is former first-round catcher Daniel Susac from the Athletics. He made his way to Triple-A for all of last season and put up solid numbers.
As mentioned earlier, Seattle is in the market now for a backup catcher and we know that the Mariners love to bring in former first-round picks and top prospects to see if they can give them another chance to succeed. If the Mariners think the mentorship of Cal Raleigh can help Susac develop into a solid backup behind him, it would certainly be a cheap way of doing so. It would also be similar to the Mariners in their plans to keep Harry Ford as the young backup catcher before trading him.
Outside of Susac, there are always interesting pitchers who are selected in the Rule 5 Draft who have the chance to be unheralded contributors in the bullpen. The Mariners love to add guys who have big stuff and unique deliveries or unique arsenals so they could always go this route too.
Overall, the Mariners find themselves in a very favorable position right now. The contract given to Naylor gives them the chance to not feel stuck or like they have to do anything. They are able to be flexible and go after any position or player they want. This leaves lots of options, so hopefully the Mariners do not disappoint and cross at least one of these items off of the wish list and make fans happy this holiday season.
