4 trades from the 1990s the Seattle Mariners no doubt wish they could do over

Some of the deals made by the Mariners front office in the 90s haven't aged well, to say the least.

The Mariners send Tino Martinez, Jeff Nelson to the Bronx - 1995

Tino Martinez better send Woody Woodward a Christmas card every year because without this trade Martinez's hand would be four World Series rings lighter.

Two years after the Hampton and Vizquel trades, Seattle packaged up Martinez and pitchers Jim Mecir and Jeff Nelson, sending the trio to the Bronx in exchange for third baseman Russ Davis and pitcher Sterling Hitchcock. Yet again, it was a return of average to below-average production in the deal for the M's.

Davis played for Seattle from 1996-1999 and, across those four seasons, managed a paltry 0.1 bWAR, batting .256/.309/.446, which works out to above seven percent below league average in terms of OPS+. Meanwhile, Hitchcock lasted one year in Seattle and, well, all we can really say is he ate some innings, tossing 196 2/3 frames for the Mariners across 35 starts. The front office sent him to San Diego in a trade that fall, ending his brief stint in the Pacific Northwest.

In New York, Jim Mecir wound up as an afterthought in the deal. He was pretty much a non-factor with the Yankees, but the impact of Nelson and, more notably, Martinez was clear. Nelson came full circle, which lessened the blow of losing him in the 90s, returning to the Mariners from 2001-2003 and playing a key role in the Seattle bullpen at a critical juncture.

But the big name in this trade is Martinez, who anchored first base for six years in the Bronx, winning four World Series championships at the peak of the late-90s Yankees dynasty. He was, more or less, a 30/100 guy for New York during that stretch, but was regularly overshadowed by the superstars around him. His 1997 campaign marked the high-water mark for him, as he finished second in AL MVP voting and brought home a Silver Slugger after hitting 44 home runs and driving in 141 runs.
