4 trades from the 1990s the Seattle Mariners no doubt wish they could do over

Some of the deals made by the Mariners front office in the 90s haven't aged well, to say the least.

Seattle unloads a future 11-time Gold Glove infielder - 1993

A mere 10 days later, Woodward made another misstep of historic proportions, trading future 11-time Gold Glover Omar Vizquel to the Cleveland Indians for Reggie Jefferson and Felix Fermin.

Who? Exactly. Jefferson and Fermin combined for -0.2 bWAR in a Mariners uniform while Vizquel spent the next decade in Cleveland cementing his place as one of the greatest defensive middle infielders of all-time (30.2 bWAR from 1994-2004).

His peak years undoubtedly came as a member of the Indians franchise, but were part of an incredible 24-year MLB career, split across six different teams, including Cleveland, Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago, Texas and Toronto.

Even during his Mariners playing days, Vizquel was a solid ballplayer, earning 10.3 bWAR (more than half of which came in 1992 and 1993, the two years preceding the trade to Cleveland). His glove accounted for the overwhelming share of his value, as he was a solidly below-average hitter in his early playing days. In his final year in Seattle, he brought home his first Gold Glove for his work at shortstop, driving up his trade value that winter.

The sheer longevity of Vizquel's career saw him set countless records. He remains, to this day, the all-time MLB leader in double plays turned at shortstop, highest fielding percentage by a shortstop (min. 1,000 games played), and ranks third in assists by a shortstop all-time.

This deal probably goes overlooked in some circles because the heir at shortstop in Seattle was Alex Rodriguez, who took over the job starting in 1995 before turning the game on its head in 1996, turning in a 9.4 bWAR season and finishing second in AL MVP voting. It's hard to miss a defensive wizard when you're watching one of the greatest all-around talents in baseball history doing what he does best on a nightly basis.

Still, the return for a player of Vizquel's caliber felt (and still feels) very light.
