Jarred Kelenic and Logan Gilbert are Your Mariners MVPs for September 13 – 19
The rookies are taking over in Seattle. In this edition of Mariners Weekly MVP, the honor must be split between two of the Mariners’ most prized prospects: outfielder Jarred Kelenic and starting pitcher Logan Gilbert. In a week where Seattle lost some ground in the American League Wild Card chase while going 3-3 against the Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals, Kelenic and Gilbert were unmissable bright spots.
Jarred Kelenic hammered out a .333 BA, .500 OBP, and 1.357 OPS, with seven hits, six runs scored, two doubles, three home runs, seven RBIs, and a stolen base over this week’s games, while Logan Gilbert worked a 1-0 win-loss record with a 2.08 ERA and 0.78 WHIP over two starts.
If there’s any silver lining in this week’s disappointing slip in the standings, it’s these two young stars giving Mariners fans a glimpse of a potentially very bright future in Seattle. After earning Mariners MVP honors last week, Kelenic continued his hot streak and became a legitimately dominant force in the lineup, while Gilbert exhibited his ace potential by commanding his 96 mph fastball better than we’ve seen all season.
Although it’s never enjoyable to lose ground in the playoff race, seeing this kind of growth from top prospects taking place during the most competitive timeframe of the season is an exhilarating breath of fresh air. With the Mariners certainly still in the mix with postseason aspirations, it doesn’t get much more fun than seeing our future stars lead the present charge.
