The Mariners’ no. 2 prospect, Julio Rodriguez gave Seattle Mariners fans a scare yesterday after being hit in the wrist

The last thing Seattle Mariners fans want to hear about is Julio Rodriguez getting injured in the Dominican Winter League. Rodriguez suffered a left hairline fracture in his wrist during Mariners’ summer workouts and taxi squad scrimmages during the regular season. In yesterday’s Dominican Winter League game, Rodriguez was hit on the wrist. Luckily, it hit his right wrist and not his left.

As the no. 15 overall MLB prospect, the Mariners highly prize Julio Rodriguez and injuries are the biggest fear. As mentioned earlier, Rodriguez suffered a pretty hairline fracture in his wrist. In 2019, he strained his back which took him out of some Arizona League games. Rodriguez is 19-years-old and still needs lots of reps to develop into a star which is what he is projected for. But, the Mariners also need to balance his health and ensure that Rodriguez can stay on the field.

The outfielder stayed in the game after his hit by a pitch and stole second base. Apparently, Mariners fans including myself overreacted because we are so worried about Rodriguez. He tweeted after the game saying that the wrist is good and he is ready to continue playing for the Escogido’s. Julio Rodriguez joined an Escogido team that also has the top prospect in the MLB from the Tampa Bay Rays, Wander Franco, and even former Mariners pitcher Fernando Rodney.

It is scary to imagine what would have happened if he took the fastball to his left wrist. It could have reaggravated his hairline fracture which seems to be feeling good since Julio Rodriguez was hitting well in the Instructional League.
