The start of the Mariners’ preseason will have to hold off until tomorrow.

Like the arm of Drew Smyly, this year’s annual ‘Vedder Cup’ game between the Padres and Mariners got a bit too soggy. Two hours before the scheduled first pitch, the game was officially called due to a downpour of rain in the Peoria, Arizona desert despite a forecast of brighter times in the hours to come.

It’s Spring Training and even the slightest hint at an unsafe playing field will be a massive red flag for both teams and Major League Baseball, especially in the first exhibition game of the year, so it’s no surprise that the cancellation came down quick.

While an unfortunate start to the year for Mariners fans hoping to hear their team’s game on the radio today, or to even get down to the ballpark themselves, the good news is that now Seattle’s first Cactus League matchup of the year against the Rangers will be televised on ROOT Sports at 12:10 PM PT tomorrow.

The weather forecast for tomorrow predicts clear skies and warm weather for first pitch, which is now expected to be delivered by second-year lefty Yusei Kikuchi. Seattle’s top pitching prospect, Logan Gilbert, is also expected to make an appearance in the game, so it’s lining up to be a fun watch.

If you are in Arizona and had purchased tickets for today’s game, you can find information about exchanges and refunds at the Peoria Sports Complex’s official website. The process for either appears to be pretty straightforward with exchanges handled at the complex’s box office and refunds through whichever means they were purchased.
